Tell us all about the proposal!
The proposal was a complete surprise! At the time, Jon was living in Illinois for graduate school and I was living in Minneapolis. I was in town visiting him for a couple days before we were scheduled to drive to Ohio for his sister’s baby shower and my family reunion. We had dinner plans at our favorite restaurant on Friday; however, due to an unexpected health scare and spending the night in the hospital, we were unable to go. The next day, we were supposed to leave for Ohio and as we were getting ready to go, I was getting impatient because we were running late. I asked him, “Are you ready now?” He responded, “I have one more thing to do.” I turned around and he was down on one knee! It turns out that Jon had planned to propose at the restaurant the night before. When we got to Ohio, I found out that our families knew what was happening and they were so excited when we arrived!
Wedding Style
Our wedding style was very classic and chic. We aren’t very flashy people and really wanted our wedding and attire to reflect who we truly are.
When we got engaged, I didn’t really know what style of dress I was looking for, but figured I would know it when I saw it. I went to several wedding gown boutiques between Minnesota and Ohio over the course of a few months and I really hadn’t found anything I loved. For our wedding, our main priority was our guests so I really didn’t allocate much to attire in our budget. One of my bridesmaids and I decided to go to a sample sale at a local shop to see what all they had. I had seen the Nicole Miller Dakota gown online and thought it was pretty but had never tried it on. The boutique had one in their sample sale for 70% off and it was perfect! To top everything off, I ended up adding a tulle sash to add a little texture, a birdcage veil that I made, and jewelry from Etsy.
Culture
During our ceremony, we “jumped the broom” using a broom hand decorated by Jon’s Mom. Jon is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (the infamous Delta Xi Chapter),so during the reception, all of the Alphas in attendance circled around me, linked up, and sang the Alpha Hymn…this was a very special moment because Jon, his brother, and Dad, as well as many of his close family and friends are all Alphas.
Memories
Our favorite memories from the wedding were getting to see so many of our friends and family together and having a blast! Most of our guests were from Ohio; however, very few lived in Columbus. It was a blessing to have guests that were willing and able to travel from afar to celebrate with us! Our main priority was for everyone to really enjoy the fun, love, and many blessings during our wedding day—and we think we accomplished that.
Help a bride-to-be out!
If it’s in your budget, hire a good wedding planner and videographer! Since neither of us currently lived in Ohio, we had to rely on those who did with a lot of our planning. Planning a wedding from out of state was difficult as it was and I can’t imagine having to do it without a wedding planner. The day of the wedding went so smoothly, and we didn’t have to worry about anything and could actually enjoy the day! We were on the fence about getting a videographer but after seeing a few videos, we decided we had to hire one! Our videographer and our stunning photographer worked well alongside each other in capturing the wholeness of our wedding day.
