Kaili and Aquil both attended Georgetown University, however, it wasn’t until after they graduated that they became friends. Fate brought them together and Kaili coincidently moved to Brooklyn, New York just a few blocks from Aquil. It took some time but eventually Aquil convinced Kaili to take their relationship to the next level. The pair started dating and soon enough Aquil proposed while they watched the sunset during a vacation in Brazil.

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. We were both students at the same time at GU, but Aquil graduated 2 years earlier than me. We were actually not friends in college. Post-graduation, while Aquil was living in NYC and I was living in Philadelphia (Aquil’s hometown)- we ran into each other and started a conversation. We became friends after I coincidently moved to Brooklyn – a few blocks away from where Aquil lived. After a long time (and A LOT of persistence from Aquil) – our friendship turned into more ;)
Aquil proposed on May 21, 2016 in Jericoacoara, Brazil. I didn’t see it coming until I realized there was a photographer following us. Aquil lied and said she was only there to capture us watching the sunset. Hmmmm… then we freaked out together.
What was wedding shopping like for you? I intended to do my shopping online and do as little as possible in an actual store! I went into the process thinking I would find my dress in a little boutique and not at a large retailer… I was SO wrong. I found my dress at Kleinfeld in NYC. My dress is everything I thought that I wouldn’t want but I love it!
Favorite item on the menu: Shrimp & Grits
First dance song: “Adorn” by Miguel
What is your best memory from your wedding? Our best memory from our wedding was the walk into the reception and seeing all of our friends and family gathered in the reception hall. We really wanted to see the reaction of our parents! It was the first time we could really see everyone who came to celebrate and it was our time to celebrate! (Aquil) I also really enjoyed the Delta serenade, to see my mom, aunt, and wife sharing a moment was amazing.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples?
Our advice to engaged couples is to be thorough in your preparation but on the day of your wedding let the pros do what they do best on the wedding day so you can enjoy it. Tell your pros what you want and be specific about what is the most important to you. Remember a few things will be missed. Let it go. On your day you won’t even worry about the details anymore. Make sure you enjoy your family and friends!
