High school sweethearts, Kawanna and Andreas’ gorgeous New York wedding is sure to bring out the holiday spirit and help quench the summer heat. Their ceremony took place at one of New York’s greatest architectural adornments, the Church of St. Vincent Ferrer. Kawanna lit up the aisle in a beautiful Berta dress with classic lace-applique appeal and modern-cut curves. Her most memorable moments include the exchanging of vows, and for brides & grooms-to-be she advices not to “let wedding planning take over your life. Things may go wrong, but at the end of the day it will be perfect regardless.”

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Andreas and I have been sweethearts since high school! He proposed in San Juan on the Island of Puerto Rico, it was perfect!
Describe your wedding dress. Berta spring 2016 collection – Form fitting, figure flattering avant-garde dress with antique lace and pearl embroidery with a deep keyhole back with a detachable beaded belt and a long dramatic lace train.
How was wedding dress shopping for you? I went to a few bridal shops before I made my final selection. Wedding dress shopping was a little difficult since I am petite and curvy and a lot of wedding dresses seemed to cater to a specific body type that I am the complete opposite of. I was very impressed with the intricate detail that designer Berta put into each one of their dresses. I felt as if I was wearing not just a dress but a piece of art.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Our wedding was a blend of both cultures, West Indian (Barbados) and Puerto Rican. Our food selections during the cocktail hour were a careful blend of foods that represented each country, the music selection was a mix of both cultures. There were two wedding cakes, one of which was the traditional rum cake aka “black cake” customarily found at west indian weddings. One of the wedding favors included mini rum bottles made in Barbados.
Bridesmaids gifts: Kate spade clutch and earrings, personalized robes and Talaria flats shoes.
Groomsmen gifts: Personalized gift boxes which included an engraved shot glass and flask, and Versace men’s cologne.
Favorite Item on the Menu: Filet Mignon, haricot vets, carrots, roasted potatoes.
First Dance Song: Eric Benet featuring Tamia – “Spend my life with you.”
What is the best memory from your wedding? The exchanging of Vows…and the garter removal & toss!
What is the best advise you can give to engaged couples? Have patience with each other during the wedding planning, try to have fun with it, respect each other’s opinions and compromise when needed. Don’t let wedding planning take over your life. Things may go wrong, but at the end of the day it will be perfect regardless.
