“We are one” – Derrick and Joel’s Stylish Wedding in Atlanta Georgia

Defining moments of bliss are found in the ability to express love for our most significant others. The true joy of a relationship is the comfort of knowing that wherever you are in the world, at any given moment on any given day, someone has dedicated themselves to you; navigating through life by guidance of conscientious winds sensitive to your emotional health and well being - and that you have the privilege of reciprocation.

On a seemingly random day of ordinary shopping, the powers that be, gifted Joel with, as he affectionately describes, "a beautiful angel...in real time." It was a mutual gift, for in finding our "angel" we are also an angel found.
After setting aside his fears, Joel made his approach in the parking lot immediately upon exiting the store to realize that Derrick was equally as smitten -  and, "from that night on, our love story began."

In less than two years together Derrick and Joel already knew their relationship was destined for marriage. And on Christmas Eve of 2014, during a holiday road trip to Derrick's hometown, at a posh martini bar, Joel asked Derrick to be his partner for life. It was a moment filled with "surprise, tears of joy and uncontrollable laughter."

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal: Our initial meeting was at Perimeter Mall located in Atlanta, GA. We met on a fall evening on September 27th 2012 in Urban Outfitters. While purchasing a t-shirt, I (Joel) noticed Derrick behind me, waiting to purchase some items.  Upon noticing Derrick, I could not take my eyes off of him. It was like a beautiful angel had caught my eye in real time.  I hurried and paid for my item and quickly exited the store, while looking back three to four times at Derrick. When he exited the store into the parking lot I, exterminating all fear, made my approach (a little creepy, I know). From that night on, our love story began.

As our relationship progressed, Derrick and I seriously entertained the idea of marriage and a life together within a year and a half to two years into our relationship.  As we talked about marriage, the conversation became serious and on a Christmas road trip to Derrick’s hometown in Lexington, Kentucky, I had a plan to ask him to become my partner for life. Derrick had no idea that he would be leaving his hometown engaged.  Moreover, after a snowy day in Kentucky, we journeyed to the Big Blue Martini located in downtown Lexington on Christmas Eve of 2014. It was that night that I made another major move asking Derrick to marry me. The moment was filled with surprise, tears of joy and uncontrollable laughter as his first cousin, Whitney, recorded the whole engagement.

Wedding Style: Our groomsmen wore black Calvin Kline tuxedos with white handkerchiefs and the groomsmaids wore flowing custom ivory gowns. The gowns were a custom one-shoulder design that each groomsmaid loved.

What was wedding shopping like for you? Wedding shopping was exciting and nerve wrecking at the same time. As we began to plan, there were so many options to choose from like our save the dates, wedding invitations, and wedding colors.  Joel loves an array of colors, so it was a challenge for us to finally come to an agreement that ivory and gold would be our final colors.  We also knew that we wanted custom tuxedos and it was a bit challenging searching for the right vendor to make them for us.

What is your best memory from your wedding?  The best memory from our wedding was the sharing of vows in front of our most close family and friends. About a year to the date of our marriage, we were not permitted to legally marry in the state of Georgia and this moment was extremely emotional for both of us as we were able to profess our love for one another amongst those closest to us and our union be recognized by the state of Georgia.

What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? We encourage engaged couples to stay focused on the bigger picture. It’s best to focus on what you want out of your wedding. Family and friends do matter, but it’s your special day, so do whatever you want so long as you and your partner are happy. We also encourage couples to spend within their means.  It’s easy to get caught up in the image, but never forget you have to live after your special day. We believe that simplicity with style is KEY!
