JULIA IDESON LIBRARY
Whether you are hosting a wedding, a holiday reception, a private party, or corporate event, the historic Julia Ideson Library is the perfect setting for your story, located at 550 McKinney, Houston, Texas 77002. Nestled among the modern skyscrapers of downtown, the Julia Ideson Library opened in 1926 and served as the city’s main library for fifty years. It remains a working part of the Houston Public Library system, housing an archive of Houston and Texas history. Designed in the Spanish Renaissance style and full of lavish architectural detail, this sentinel of Houston’s history offers a variety of spaces and design arrangements for your special event. For more information, or to schedule the next chapter of your story, please contact hpl.specialevents@houstontx.gov or call (832) 393-1646.

How long has the venue been in business? Approximately 6 years ago the Ideson Library opened as an event venue, following the completion of a $32M renovation.

What is the maximum capacity for events at your venue? The maximum capacity varies depending on the configuration and flow of the event. Typically, this number ranges from 200 for ceremonies up to 400 for non-traditional receptions.

What is the average base cost for weddings? The standard wedding event rental rate for the Ideson Library is $8300 and up. On holidays observed by the City of Houston and on Sundays the rate is $9300 and up.

What’s included in a booking? The rate includes exclusive use of all the rentable spaces in the entire building (except the Exhibit Hall). We rent space only, so our clients are responsible for providing a caterer, linens, furniture, place settings, and A/V equipment. We rely on our list of pre-approved caterers who have experience working at the Ideson to assist clients to secure additional vendors.  The rates for rental spaces are “as is” and any furniture moving/rearrangement/setup begins at $256 and up, depending on the setup diagram and instructions provided by event/wedding planner.

Are there any bridal suites at the venue? There are areas/rooms that can be made available to the bride/bridal party for dressing and touching-up.

What makes your venue unique for weddings? Couples can create their own fairytale or continue a storybook romance within the beautiful Spanish architecture and wonderful ambiance that is unique to the Ideson.

Are couples able to do indoor and outdoor events? Yes, events can be held indoors and outdoors.

When it comes to catering, are couples able to use a caterer of their choice? We recommend a pre-approved list of approximately 14 caterers to choose from. However, if the desired caterer is not listed, a qualification process needs to be completed at least thirty (30) days in advance of the event.

Is there anything else you'd like our couples to know? The client is required to hire a certified wedding planner to ensure that every detail is taken care of and the couple, family and guests can celebrate and create magical memories!
