Jaamal says he first “peeped” Sharida at a Kappa Alpha Psi probate but the two formally met through mutual friends and later exchanged contacts via Facebook. Fast forwarding, through a few years of dating, Jaamal realized that the girl he ‘peeped at the probate’ was his soulmate and began crafting the perfect proposal. For months, he formulated a game plan in his head. But of course you can plan a pretty proposal but you can’t predict the weather.
“I’d rented a sailboat and planned on doing a sunset cruise where I would propose with the SC sunset backdrop while on the water. Well that didn’t go off without a hitch. It rained the entire day, literally the whole day”, says Jaamal. So he decided to go with Plan B and what was plan b? Well there was no plan B!
“I ended up making a late reservation at a restaurant and proposing there. I talked with the owner when we got there and he blocked off the upstairs of the restaurant, which is like a rooftop overlook, so that I could do it in private” shares Jaamal. And of course Sharida said yes!
In love nothing is ever perfect, so while the proposal didn’t go as originally planned, it was nothing short of a fairy-tale moment. Describe your wedding dress. What was wedding shopping like for you?
Sharida: I wore a princess style ball gown. I’m very indecisive, so the process gave me quite a bit of anxiety. I tried on what seemed like hundreds of dresses and they all looked good to me. My mom and sister helped me make the final decision.

Sharida: My favorite moment was seeing my fiance for the first time when the doors of the church opened and I walked down the aisle. I had so much anxiety that day, but when I looked at him, I felt a sense of calm come over me.
What’s the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples?
Pick your battles – everything is not worth proving your point. Always stay on the same team no matter what obstacles are faced with. And keep folks outside of the relationship, out of your business.
