Kia and Terrance married on September 1st three years ago and have been keeping the love alive with frequent date nights, laughs and plenty of communication. For their third anniversary, they opted for an Anniversary Session with the talented Cierra of Southern Amore Studios. She perfectly captured the essence of their relationship – an old school kinda love. A lover of all things vintage, Kia was influenced by the 50 year relationship of of her grandparents and her love for old hollywood glam. Below, the pair share some useful marriage advice.
Couple: Kia and Terrance Butler
Location of shoot: Downtown Baton Rouge Session
When did you get married and where? September 1, 2013 in Baton Rouge, LA
What was your wedding like? I like to say that our wedding had a vintage chic vibe – simple yet beautiful and reflective of who we are individually and as a couple.
As you celebrate your anniversary, what do you remember most about your wedding day? Before our wedding day, Terrance kept saying, “I don’t care what happens, what goes right or wrong, I just want us to have fun and enjoy our day” and that’s exactly what happened. No matter how much planning and effort you put into things, 9 times out of 10 there will be a curve ball or hiccup. Everything didn’t go exactly as planned, but we both had a blast.
Was there anything you would have done differently for your wedding? If I could do things all over, I’d probably have a much smaller wedding – Something much more intimate. I might also reconsider having an outdoor ceremony lol. It was a little hot and humid in true Louisiana fashion.
What are your favorite things to do as a couple? Together, we enjoy traveling and spending time with our family.
Who cooks? We both cook, however, in Terrance’s mind, he’s “The Cook”. To keep the peace, I just agree :).
When it comes to career, what do both of you do and how do you make time for each other? I’m an Employee Relations Consultant for a Home Health & Hospice Company and Terrance is a Sales Rep for a Safety Company. Luckily, our schedules are pretty compatible. We have “TV Time” quite often during the week, watching shows that we both enjoy together after dinner. We also try to have “date night” as often as we can. It’s always fun to do the things that got us to this point.
What would you say are the most important elements for a successful marriage? I think it all boils down to communication. It’s the foundation for it all. With adequate communication, you have a fighting chance, but without it, you’re unequipped for the battle.
How do you keep the spark in your marriage? Honestly, with each other we’re goofy! Lol We’re always laughing with and at each other. It keeps things fun. Life is already so serious, so it’s good to be able to let your hair down with the one you love.
Tell us about the shoot. What inspired it? Every woman loves the opportunity to get dolled up. And I’m a vintage soul, so this was the perfect opportunity to live out my vintage fantasy. Besides the beauty of vintage fashion and glam, I also love the idea of “vintage love”. I’m inspired when I look at the love of the generations before us. My grandparents have been married for over 50 years. To me, that’s amazing, and it’s something for us to look forward to as a married couple. I wanted the shoot to be reminiscent of just that – an old school, timeless love.
What do you love most about him? He brings such balance to our relationship. I’m so extreme in some ways, and he’s always so calm and collected.
What does he love most about you? Terrance always says that the thing he loves most is my drive. He’s always said that seeing me pursue my goals and chase my dreams keeps him motivated to be a better man in every aspect.
What advice can you give for newlyweds? Keep it fun. Take the time to enjoy and appreciate each other and seize every opportunity to create memories from the moments you share with each other. Also, regardless of what you face, remember that you are facing it together – you’re on the same side.
