For ten years, Sharline, an elementary school teacher and Jake, a correctional officer attended the same church. But it wasn’t until a relocation brought the two closer together that the relationship evolved. After courting for some time, Jake involved family, friends, and a game in a proposal to Sharline. The two took a walk along Patapsco River State Park, Baltimore Harbor, and the National Mall as they discussed their upcoming night to remember on June 18, 2016.
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
We met at church so we have known each other for over 10 years but our relationship didn’t begin until about a year and a half ago before I moved to Texas for grad school!
I moved back from Texas on June 12, 2015. Once I came back, I was busy getting ready for a community event I was helping plan. On June 13th, I volunteered at the event. All my friends and many family members were there helping, as well as Jake. Around 5pm, Jake started urging me to go to a friend’s party at church. As we got inside, he opened another door and all I heard was, “Surprise!” I couldn’t believe it! I didn’t even walk in right away! I was too busy fussing with Jake, saying, “Oh my God, I can’t believe you!” I walked into a room filled with loved ones, music, flashing lights, and cheers. Right away, I was taken to the back where a make-up artist was waiting to have me look my best. By this time, my mind was racing! What is going on? Is he going to..? What is going to happen here?
Finally, I came back into the party and I was invited into a game with several other participants, including Jake. For the game, they seated three ladies with three young men behind them. Each lady (including me) had an object in their hand which was to describe the male behind them. One had a microphone, a pen, and I had a pillow! A pillow! I’m thinking, What? I went last and said it was referring to Jake sleeping because he worked so hard. He stood and began to verify my statement and basically said that he couldn’t wait to sleep next to me and he wanted to marry me. By this point, I was flooded with people cheering and hollering as he got down in front of me with the ring.
The engagement session…
It was relaxing and fun! We were simply being us. We enjoyed every second. It was like falling in love all over again. Our photographer and my good friend Jemima were amazing! They went above and beyond. Thanks, Wendell for a great shoot! We have memories for a lifetime!
What did you do on your first date?
We went to Baltimore Inner Harbor & went to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
We love to travel! We were in a long distance relationship for a bit and we were always traveling! We have a long list of places we want to go and we have gone to so many over the last year. We love staying busy and enjoying the best things in life.
How has wedding planning been so far?
Nonstop! Oh my God! There’s so much to do and I’m praying it all gets done! But truly, it’s been great! I’m surrounded by so many amazing friends who are willing to help in any way and I am forever grateful!
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
I must say, walking down the aisle to a man that I know will cherish me and care for me for all of our days together is what I’m most looking forward to.
