Shirline and Marco met on the dance floor at 33 Lounge in Randolph, Massachusetts. They hit it off right away, spending the night talking and dancing. That chance encounter led them to their first date and many dates after that, forming a loving bond that would get them both down the aisle.
Marco took a cue from Cupid when he was ready to propose. It was Valentine’s day in 2012, they were dining at one of Shirline’s favorite restaurants, Maggiano’s Little Italy, and Marco was extremely nervous. He’d been to the bathroom at least three times during the night but Shirline wasn’t very suspicious. At the end of the meal, she spotted a chocolate cake that she wanted to try but wasn’t sure if she should. Marco insisted that she get it. Out came the cake accompanied by a diamond ring and the words “Will you marry me?” written on the rim of the plate.

Describe your wedding dress. What was wedding shopping like for you?
My wedding dress was very simple and elegant. It is lace with breading in the chest. It was a flattering trumpet organza gown. It was glamorous and sophisticated while showcasing an attention to detail. Strapless bodice is highlighted with subtle ruching and ruffled trim. Empire waist features beautiful beaded detail. Trumpet skirt is adorned with elegant embellished lace. One day while driving with my mom, I heard David’s Bridal was having a sale so we decided to stop by. It was the first dress I tried on and it fit perfectly. After trying several others my mom and I both agreed that this was the one. That was the first day I went dress shopping and found it.
How was culture incorporated in your wedding?
Haitian culture was a huge part of our wedding. With Marco being born in Haiti as well as both of his parents, and my parents both being born in Haiti, our culture is very important to us. We celebrated with our foods, music and dance. While preparing for the day we drank our traditional soup joumou squash soup.
What is your best memory from your wedding?
My best memory is Marco picking me up during our first dance. Once again completely unexpected. That truly made my night, he never fails to surprise me.
What advice do you have for engaged couples?
Please remember it is only one day it’s an amazing day, but it’s one day. Spend wisely, enjoy each moment even in the planning process. You walk away with memories, but most importantly the pictures. Pick a good photographer because each photo captured, brings me right back to that very moment. I relive the day through the photos. The night goes by extremely quickly. I also highly recommend a wedding planner. Speaking from someone who planned her entire wedding alone it was most overhelemming the day of, everyone comes to you. The wedding planner would replace that role as it should be on that day. It should be your day to relax as much as possible.
