Getting engaged is an exciting time and puts you straight into the wedding planning zone once the excitement has ebbed somewhat. Inspiration abound on every corner; from blogs to Pinterest offering advice on what to do and how to tackle what.

Before you get too carried away, first decide with your intended, on the style of wedding you want that compliments both your personalities. Do you want a masquerade ball for 200 guests in an upscale hotel? Or a casual intimate wedding reception with close friends and family? In the city or out in the countryside?

Here are 5 prompts that’ll help you determine your style:

What type of wedding do you want that will suit both your personalities?
Your personalities will certainly come into it as it is your day after all and you want to put your own stamp on it as a couple. Perhaps, start with your favourite colours, favourite place or favourite movie and start narrowing down options from there. For example, do you like period dramas? In which case you might go for a vintage or Gatsby themed affair. If your favourite colours are muted tones like gold, champagne and ivory with hints of blush then your wedding style will likely lean towards the classic, timeless elegant look. You both will probably want a wedding that is slightly understated but still classy and elegant.

What is your budget?
Your budget plays a role in the style of wedding you want. If you want a fairytale wedding with horse drawn carriages and glass slippers – then your budget needs to match that. When it comes to sourcing the various details that will make your day, be prepared to spend lots. As long as you can plan for it, there should be no issue with executing the style you want.

How many guests will attend?
Guest numbers should not really dictate your style in my view because, you first determine your style and then start working on your guest list to match your preferred style. However, if large families are involved in the wedding for example, it may be difficult to plan an intimate wedding for 300 guests, especially if your style is small, intimate, romantic and whimsical, so do bear it in mind as you decide.

In recent times, I’ve seen couples determine their guest numbers first based on their budgets. Next, they go out hunting for a venue that will accommodate their numbers and let the venue aesthetics determine their style. I wouldn’t personally recommend this option as it doesn’t quite put you in the driving seat for your wedding as, you’re letting outside factors influence your decision, but it’s always good to have options.

What part of the celebration means most to you both individually and as a couple?
Is it the ceremony, the reception, the cake, speeches or honeymoon? Knowing this will help you to focus your efforts and more importantly your budget on the design and style aspects that matter most to you.
