Jennifer and Ernie first connected through her best friend and began chatting via Blackberry Messenger. Amid the clatter of Blackberry keyboard clicks, Jennifer next found herself tweeting with Ernie. One day, when she posted about having a single ticket up for grabs for a Houston Rockets game, Ernie tweeted back to accept and the two planned to link up at the game that night. “Truth be told, I was scared. I was meeting a random dude from online,” says Jennifer. However, she wasn’t alone – with her best friend and cousin squad in tow, they headed to the arena. As they arrived, they were greeted by, what Jennifer recalls as, a cheesing Ernie.
As the game went on in the background, the pair chatted and cheered on their Rockets home team. While to this day, neither can tell you whether the Rockets won or not, that memorable March 2010 night commenced their lifelong journey.
Dashing through their whirlwind courtship, Ernie next found himself ready to deliver those four magic words to his soulmate. To set the stage, Ernie convinced Jennifer to host a brunch in celebration of her Master’s degree following her graduation. And after much debate, Jennifer agreed.
Once family and friends arrived at the celebration, which took place at Del Frisco’s Grille, the group began performing celebratory speeches to congratulate Jennifer on her achievements. When the spotlight turned to Ernie, he started his speech with “I think it’s time for me to take the next step”, and in no time, Jennifer began to piece together what was happening. Her heart melted in excitement, and she immediately said, “Yes”.
In a beautifully simple, ivory-hued, floral-filled ceremony space, E&J solidified their love. Jennifer sported a dazzling Winnie Couture mermaid gown outfitted with a soft organza layered skirt. Along with tying the knot, the two literally “tied the knot”, in a knotting ceremony. Using fisherman’s rope, this practice symbolizes two lives intertwining as one with a knot being tied at the end, to represent the couple’s future and how strong their marriage bond will continue to be.
Infusing culture into their wedding was also key for this beautiful couple. The pair first exchanged “I do’s” in a traditional African ceremony (held a week prior to their wedding day) as a way to pay homage to Ernie’s roots, as his family is from Cameroon, Africa. Their wedding menu also reflected both cultures as foods ranging from fried chicken and smothered mashed potatoes to cajun seasoned spinach, plantains and suya (a specialty in Cameroon) were served.
Though the now outdated BBM technology originally connected Jennifer and Ernie, their love will remain everlasting. Within their wedding photos, the couple pose handcuffed together, as Jennifer holds the lock to the key – symbolizing her ownership to the key to Ernie’s heart. And similar to the day they met, a cheesing Ernie smiles in agreement.

Culture: Ernie’s parents are from Cameroon, Africa, so we had a traditional African wedding a week prior to our American Wedding to incorporate both cultures. The food at our wedding represented both cultures also, we had a great mixture of fried chicken, smothered mashed potatoes, cajun seasoned spinach, plantains and suya.
Wedding Style: My wedding dress was purchased from the Houston designer, Winnie Couture. Her name was Esme, it was a Mermaid gown with sweetheart neckline, ruched bodice and soft organza layered skirt in Crystal White. My favorite wedding accessory was my hair jewels.
Favorite Item on the Menu: The Do-Nut Dessert Bar from Glazed Doughnuts.
Wedding Cake Flavors: Lemon and Grand Marnier layers.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen Gifts: Groomsmen received a Customized Money clip, cigar, personal bottle of liquor, and a bow tie complementing our wedding color.
Bridesmaids received matching pajamas complementing the wedding color, personalized t-shirts, and a handwritten note from the bride.
First Dance Song: Infinity, Raheem DeVaughn
Memories: The best memory from my wedding was the love everyone showed from near and far. Family and friends traveled from various states and countries to help us celebrate this new journey, that felt amazing!
Help a Bride-to-be out! The best advice I would give to an engaged couple is to stay on one accord. Through it all, have each others back and make decisions together.
