Teynarae and Henry’s love story first began at the Dunmore beach resort in the Bahamas. Teynarae was new to the island, and accompanied by a friend that knew Henry. Though they didn’t start dating for a few months from that moment, it certainly planted a seed of interest that would one day bloom into love. The path to that day began while both were attending the same book club. “The book club is no longer together but luckily we still are,” Teynarae states with affection.
Some of their favorite wedding day moments include “watching each other walk down the aisle” and “finally becoming the family that we wanted to be in the presence of the people we love the most…”

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. We met at the bar at the Dunmore while Henry was at work. I was new to the island (Bahamas) and was there with a friend that knew him. We actually didn’t start dating until months later when we joined this book club together. The book we were reading was “Gone Girl.” The book club is no longer together but luckily we still are.
The proposal was at a restaurant in Chianti Italy called “il ristoro di lamole.” We drove about an hour outside of Siena Italy, where we were renting a little house from Air BnB, up a mountain that housed this amazing vineyard. After about 2 courses of one the most amazing meals of my life we ordered dessert. Just as they were about to bring out the dessert the maitre’d came over with a tray saying it was chocolates from the kitchen. When I opened it, there was a ring box and Henry was on his knee.
What was wedding shopping like for you? My wedding dress was a mermaid style by Mori Lee. Dress shopping was the simplest, most low key thing I’ve ever done. I tried on a few dresses in London while we were on vacation. A friend of ours made a few calls and we visited a store that her friend owned. I very quickly decided that wedding dress shopping was not my favorite activity. I’ve always been a really quick and decisive shopper and realized people fawning over a dress I was picking out really wasn’t for me. I knew what I wanted to look like on my wedding day, I saw a dress online that I really connected with and ordered it with no regrets.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? I did not intentionally incorporate any cultural aspects into the ceremony but was surprised after saying “I do” when my aunts got up and started singing “Narae married” which is a song traditionally sung in Hatchet Bay after a wedding. Narae is my nickname and the name of the song changes based on the bride.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen gifts: Bridesmaids received monogramed robes in a blush color, they received makeup bags with their names engraved inside, a monogramed hand mirror, earrings to wear during the ceremony (and whenever they want) a mini bottle of perfume, a champagne glass (that we for some reason never got around to using!) and a personalized card thanking them for being in my life and letting them know how much their friendship and support over the years has really meant to me. The groomsmen received monogramed cuff links, drinking flasks and shot glasses, a necktie to wear during the ceremony (and again whenever they want) and they also received monogramed pocket watches.
Favorite item on the menu: The grouper in cream sauce and jasmine rice was so good!
First dance song: “These Arms of Mine” by Al Green.
What is your best memory from your wedding? Our favorite memory was watching each other while walking down the aisle. There was so much emotion; excitement, love, anxiousness in that one moment. The thought of finally becoming the family that we wanted to be in the presence of the people we love the most and it all culminating at the end of the aisle is a very emotional memory.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Your wedding day can be whatever you want it to be. You don’t have to be tied down to tradition. It’s a celebration of the love between you two and can truly be a day of whatever you want it to be! Don’t feel obligated to do anything outside of your comfort zone and make it as personal and special to you as possible. It’s YOUR day!
