Tell us all about the proposal. He called me at work telling me he’d hurt his knee while playing basketball and needed to go to the ER. I left work frantically and rushed home expecting to find my injured boyfriend. Upon arrival, I turned on the lights to find a rose on each step leading up to my bedroom. Immediately confused, I walk up to my room to find a Victoria’s Secret bag, a brand new dress, a diamond necklace, a pair of Christian Louboutin heels, and a note with a rose on my bed telling me to be ready at 8:15. I was completely confused and excited at the same time. I got all dolled up and went downstairs at 8:25 (because I’m always fashionably late) and to my surprise there was a driver waiting outside with a Mercedes Benz ready to pick me up!
I got in and was told he is not allowed to disclose the destination to me. After a 30 min ride we arrived at the beautiful River Cafe restaurant directly under the Brooklyn bridge and out walks my Prince Charming looking so handsome in a midnight blue tux with a black lapel and matching bow tie. We proceeded inside to have an intimate dinner lit up by the Brooklyn Bridge and beautiful NYC skyline. They brought out my desert on a plate with a gold dome cover. The waiter lifts the cover and…there sat my ring! He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. After numerous “oh my gods!” and “are You Serious?!” and “I love you so much!” he whispers, “So babe…is that a yes?” I nodded my head several times, kissed him and said YES!
Many years ago before we even started dating I mentioned to him that whenever I got engaged I wanted it photographed. After I said yes he told me to look up and to my surprise there was a photographer capturing everything! A special moment after the proposal was when two couples came over to us, one celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary and another celebrating their 50th, and wished us at least 35/50 years of happiness. It was truly the most magnificent night of my life! He did that in true Fabrice (“Mr. BIG”) fashion!
What was wedding shopping like for you? I knew I wanted a dress that would outlast the different trends of the years and that I could look back 20 years from now and still see the elegance of the dress, something timeless.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Yes, my husband is Haitian so we had Cremas (a popular Haitian drink served during holidays) as our wedding favors and we incorporated some traditional Haitian and Ghanaian foods in our cocktail hour menu.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen gifts: Bridesmaids were gifted personalized flats and robes. Groomsmen were gifted engraved, gold pocket watches.
Favorite item on the menu: Our blue velvet wedding cake!
First dance song: “Here and Now” by Luther Vandross.
What is your best memory from your wedding? Our ceremony! It was such an intimate moment emotionally and spiritually that we truly felt the presence of God and were overfilled with love for each other!
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Don’t let the stress of planning steal the joy of the season you are in with your partner. Also, the days leading up to your wedding day are sacred and you should definitely be in prayer as much as you can.
