Ever wanted to step back in time to the rich and historic aristocratic times of Europe, yet get a healthy dose of romance along the way? If so, you probably want to pay a visit to the Chateau de Canisy in Normandy, France. This sprawling property with 300 hectares of forests, a farm estate, and gorgeous swan lakes is an idyllic historical paradise.
Standing since 1066 and occupied by the de Kergorlay family since the late 1700’s, this Chateau is a place that holds the memories of the passing of time. From wars and sieges, to love and marriage, the Chateau de Canisy has seen it all; if walls had ears and lips to speak, it is inevitable that the stories this place would tell would entertain and inform generations. Hosting guests such as King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, among other world leaders, visionaries, and presidents, this place is nothing if not a living, breathing monument to history.
With owners like the Comte and Comtesse Denis and Marie Christine de Kergorlay, it is no surprise that the Chateau has been able to walk the perfect line between ancient and modern, archaic and relevant, old world and present day. Denis, passionate about preserving French and European culture, was determined to keep the chateau in all its historical glory and create an environment that fostered cultural and historical discourse, while Marie Christine brought her special touch to each room. As a result, old world charm coexists peacefully with modern conveniences, including in-room wi-fi access. There’s one modern day convenience you are sure to miss at this Chateau, though: the television. The owners have specifically chosen to exclude televisions from their premises to ensure that each guest focuses on this amazing experience – but with grounds like this, who wants television?!
The Chateau de Canisy has 14 suites which are divided into: the Chateau Superior and Chateau Deluxe; each has private bathrooms. A chef is available on the premises to prepare mouth-watering farm fresh food and provide exquisite cheeses, butters and creams.
With its amazing landscape and enormous space, guests may go horseback riding, golfing, or cycling. Archery, fishing and hot air ballooning may also interest lucky guests. Guests are also able to explore the grounds’ medieval cellars, huge library of historical tomes, and family heirlooms.
Stay at the Chateau de Canisy requires at least 2 nights’ stay. Breakfast is included in the reservation, while lunches and dinners may cost 50 Euros and 90 Euros respectively. A typical stay at a double room may cost about 230 Euros, while a typical suite stay may run at 350 Euros to 450 Euros.
