Bride & Groom: Romie and Kamali
Wedding Location: North Haledon, New Jersey
Wedding Date: September 8th 2017
Romie and Kamali first became aware of each other by way of a mutual friend who was a co-worker of Kamali’s. They would see each other from time to time whenever Romie visited the store they worked at. In 2007 when Romie enrolled at Rutgers University she found that Kamali was also a student there. He introduced her to the West Indian Association Club and they began hanging out more frequently. They came to realize they lived five minutes away from each other for most of their lives and knew many more of the same people than they had thought. The more they got to know each other the more they discovered how much in common they had, particularly a love for music and dancing. There was a magnetism between them that everyone around them seemed to notice before they had. The day would finally come when they too understood just how special their connection was and could be. Thus, evolving into a partnership of unconditional love that set them on the path to becoming husband and wife.
Fast forward to September 6th 2015, at the annual barbecue hosted at Romie’s mother’s house. Expecting an intimate gathering, Romie was quite surprised to find her mother’s backyard filled with nearly a hundred family and friends. With the barbecue in full swing and Kamali handling the DJ’ing, the music came to a sudden and unexpected halt. Kamali got on the mic, appearing to be unusually nervous. With the crowd completely silent, he locked eyes Romie, his best friend and soulmate, and in the company of their loved ones asked for her hand in marriage. It was a perfect heartfelt moment leaving many in tears of joy.
In Romie’s words, she knew Kamali was “the one” when “I no longer felt the need to keep a wall, my guard, in between us. We were able to be our goofy, music loving, dancing selves around each other, and divulge all our dreams and wants in life while continuously supporting each other along the way. Our friendship was so strong that when it grew into something else we both felt that God and my grandmother, as I always say, were responsible for sending us on this path together that we could not stray from.”
Quick Facts From the Bride:
Favorite Item on Menu: The salmon was everything!
First Dance Song: Bitty McClean – Baby Tonight & J. Beatz – Fanm Pam Nan
Best Memories: “One of our best memories was our entrance being that we changed the song literally that day to Busta Rhymes’ song “Girlfriend” and we still hit it off. People thought we choreographed it since we were vibing so well but we didn’t. Dancing is just the truest expression of our love, and it was clearly shown at that moment. We also can never forget the Soca set with the Moko Jumbies (stilt walkers) where everyone was just in pure bliss, and jumping up and down with their light up sticks and whistles.”
Advice for Engaged Couples: “Remember why you are getting married, and that nothing else matters but the both of you. The stress of planning can consume you, and if you are not careful you may forget what is truly important. If everything begins to feel overwhelming don’t be afraid to ask for help from your bridal party or vendors. At the end of the day you are ultimately blessed to have found your best friend, your soul mate, your #1 dance partner…your everything.”
