When is the right time to have my Hair and Makeup consultation?

Lots of questions, concerns and myths around the big day? Not your wedding…but your hair and makeup consultation! When you have spent a lot of time focusing on your dress and thinking about your color scheme along with all the other things that go with making this special day unforgettable, you can’t forget that you have to craft the look you want to achieve regarding your hair and makeup. I tell brides that this is one of, if not the most, important decision you will make about your wedding day.
Time is of the essence when it comes to this. You can’t wait until the last minute to try and find the professional to help you achieve the look you want. Here are a few tips to remember.
- If your wedding is in 6 months or less, you need to schedule at least two hair & makeup consultations. Why? You need to be able to compare pictures and how each look makes you feel. Having at least two consultations will give you the ability to see what you like or dislike.
- If your wedding is in 6 months or more, you still need to schedule at least two hair & makeup consultations, but don’t spread them out. Four consults would be ideal. Schedule them close together, i.e. two early on in your planning phase and the other two a little later. Time can be your best friend or your worst enemy. You want to be sure that the look you want when you begin this process is the look you want on the big day.
- Make sure you like the person providing your services! I can’t stress enough how important it is to go with that “gut feeling” about your first impression. If the Makeup Artist or Hair Stylist gives you a bad vibe, don’t take the chance and try to do business with them. This is your day, your money and you have to be happy! It’s an honor as an artist to be chosen to be a part of someone’s precious moments. If the artist or stylist does not convey that in their attitude – find someone else!
- Create visual boards to provide a frame of reference for your makeup artist or hairstylist and bring them to your consultations. There is no standard “smokey eye.” What you think is extreme maybe natural for the Artist/Stylist, hence miscommunication between you and them. Find pictures of what you like and share them with your Artist and Stylist, that way an expectation has been established and you are not disappointed.
Bridal Beauty can seem like a daunting task, but it’s all worth it in the end! You want to look back at your pictures and video years down the road and fall in love with what you see every time!
