Bride & Groom: Uyiosa & Ahmed
Location of Wedding: Lagos, Nigeria
Wedding Date: January 27, 2018
Uyiosa and Ahmed’s love story began in 2012 when introduced through a mutual friend. They first exchanged BlackBerry messenger pins, getting to know each other over the phone. At the time Ahmed was based in Canada and Uyiosa in Nigeria, so they didn’t communicate too often. A few months later in December of that year Uyiosa was speaking to her and Ahmed’s mutual friend who informed her that Ahmed was back in Nigeria. They decided to take the opportunity to meet. When Uyiosa arrived at his house, the door opens to what she describes as a, “tall handsome guy wearing brown native.” It was love at first sight. Uyiosa remembers saying to herself with absolute certainty, “this is my husband.”
The holiday soon ended, Uyiosa went back to school, and Ahmed back to Canada. They managed to keep in touch and dated on and off for six years – the distance between them taking its toll but ultimately unable to keep them apart. After many invitations from Ahmed to come to Canada, Uyiosa finally agreed to visit. It was a trip that would come to forever change both of their lives, bringing them not only physically closer but also more emotionally closer than ever before. It was a trip that solidified in both of their minds how destined they are to be together.
In July of 2017 Ahmed planned a heli tour of Toronto, followed by a yacht party that same weekend. Uyiosa recalls, “On the 2nd, we go to church, House of Praise thanksgiving service in the morning, then we go to the store, then we head back home to pick up more drinks for the party. I noticed he changed his blazer with the excuse that the other one didn’t look nice.
Whereas it did, but I later found out that the previous blazer was showing the ring box so he had to change it! We get to the Heli Tour Location, we get the usual safety precautions briefing.
We get on the heli, Ahmed keeps telling the Pilot to inform us when we are on our way back. I just felt that was something normal. In the sky, he starts saying Romantic words … how he learned to know what love is since reconnecting with me – he has never told me that before… That was when I had to turn to him because the statements were getting deep. I turn, I see his eyes are red and teary, so I knew something was up. The next thing I saw was him putting his hands in his blazer pocket and bringing out the box. At that point I blanked out! We both get off and the heli crew is congratulating us and taking pictures. I was still in shock. We got back to our hotel in the City to change for the yacht party, and the party was OUR engagement party. Best day ever!”
Both being from the Edo state, descendents of the people who founded the ancient and mighty Benin Empire, Uyiosa and Ahmed had a traditional Nigerian wedding prior to their western ceremony. Their western ceremony was modern, chic and glamorous – enchanting with splashes of gold. Uyiosa was stunning in a custom gown designed by a Nigerian designer. In her words, “my wedding was spot on exactly what I had always dreamt of.”
