The seeds of Tiwa and Segun’s love first began to take root when they initially met as teenagers. It was then that life introduced them to the love of their lives in each other. But it wouldn’t be until years later when a seemingly random meeting at a graduation party would bring them back together that they would begin to realize it. Throughout that year those roots began to grow, first becoming the stem of friendship, followed shortly after by the blossoming petals of love…

Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal. We met through a mutual family friend many years ago when we were teenagers but we became true friends in May of 2014 when we ran into each other at a graduation party in Baltimore. After about a year of friendship, we started dating and our connection continued to grow. On December 19th, 2017, Segun took me to the Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh for my birthday. They were having their annual holiday show so the place was packed. We went from attraction to attraction, until we reached the end of the exhibit. At this point, I was more than ready to go home but Segun convinced me to keep looking around. As we walked into another room, I turned to take a look around and when I turned back, he was down on one knee!
Describe your engagement session. Our engagement session was held at the Phipps Conservatory because we thought it would be nice to shoot at the place where we got engaged. We didn’t necessarily have a theme in mind; we went in knowing we wanted to do one look that was more formal and another look that was more casual. We also wanted to take advantage of the outdoor space by Phipps, and to our pleasant surprise, it happened to be snowing that day. So even though we didn’t exactly have a theme for the shoot, things really worked out well for us.
The shoot itself was really fun! We were nervous we would be awkward in front of the camera, but our photographer (Omari) did an amazing job at making us feel comfortable. We couldn’t have asked for a better engagement shoot.
What did you do on your first date? This is a tough question to answer because our relationship sort of organically started from a friendship. But I would say our first official date was in August of 2015 when Segun took me out to dinner at a seafood restaurant in Baltimore.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? Our favorite thing to do is to cook a meal together at home and start a new show on Netflix with our meal and a glass or two of wine. We really value our private time with one another.
How has wedding planning been so far? It has been a lot of fun! Our wedding planner, Creations by Dami, has been amazing and has been helping us every step of the way.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day. We are most looking forward to celebrating our union with all of the people who mean the most to us in our lives, many of whom will travel very far to spend the weekend with us.
