“Do what works for you and your household and don’t put your relationship on display for any form of criticism.” ~ Brittny & Bruce
When did you get married and where? July 29, 2018, in Lake Mary, Florida at the Lake Mary Events Center.
What was your wedding like? A fun, classic glam wedding with about 150 guests. We began our wedding celebration the night before with a karaoke welcome party at the local Cheers bar! We were married the next evening by our marriage counselors (Mr. and Mrs. Slade) and chose to incorporate the tasting of the four elements into our ceremony. We wrote our own vows, which were heartfelt but showed our personality. Our bridal party was small, and we chose to have an adults-only celebration (it was much needed with the open bar!) If I could relive this day every single day for the rest of my life, I would!
As you celebrate your anniversary, what do you remember most about your wedding day? How happy our families were! It was amazing to see both sides truly gel and accept each other as family.
Was there anything you would have done differently for your wedding? Inviting fewer guests, for sure.
What are your favorite things to do as a couple? We love to travel with friends and spend time visiting family.
Do you have any children or pets? We have one four-year-old daughter, Naomi, and two dogs – an 11-year-old Silky Terrier (Ross) and an 8-month-old Goldendoodle who keeps us on our toes (Rick).
When it comes to Career, what do both of you do and how do you make time for each other? Bruce is a pharmacy manager and Brittny is a university professor and employee wellness educator. Home time is just that – home time. We don’t bring work home often unless it’s an absolute necessity and we take time to enjoy the quiet. It sounds crazy, but we also don’t have a television in the bedroom, so that space is so serene and always sets a mood for good conversation and other festivities!
What would you say are the most important elements for a successful marriage? Communication and having a positive self-image. Speak openly with love and respect and make sure you are comfortable with you before you try to share yourself with someone else.
How do you keep the spark in your marriage? We both have fun personalities so there’s never a dull moment. We take time to acknowledge what we love about each other every day and not one morning passes without Bruce telling me how great I look before I leave for work – even when I’m not in the best mood.
Tell us about the shoot. What inspired it? We wanted to remember the emotions we had on our wedding day without breaking the bank. I chose to wear the earrings and shoes from our wedding as well. I found Ella White via Instagram after we planned our trip and she was more than happy to do our shoot for us! She was fun and professional and we had an amazing time working with her.
What do you love most about one another? We both love each other’s energy. Our chemistry is amazing!
What advice can you give for newlyweds? My Matron of Honor said it best, “don’t take anyone’s marriage advice.” Do what works for you and your household and don’t put your relationship on display for any form of criticism. Protect each other in all ways – this means don’t put each other’s shortcomings out to the public and use kind words when giving feedback. You’re in it for life so make sure that your home is peaceful.
