Tori and Keegan initially crossed virtual paths on a popular dating app where they swiped right into each other’s hearts.
Though they had a great time, it was on the evening of their first date that “they quickly learned there was no romantic attraction but it was the beginning of a fruitful friendship.” Over time they became a life support system for each other, and as that friendship continued to deepen, other feelings also began to arise. Like the flipping of a switch, the physical attraction was turned on at full volume. It was on Valentine’s Day when they declared their love for each other and were official soon after. Tell us how you met? As many of you know they met on the dating app Tinder when Tori was visiting NYC on a weekend trip! There was an instant connection after Keegan messaged Tori “she got money” in response to her working at 3M (he’s def with her for her paper). After a couple of months of texting, they went on their first date at Corner Social in Harlem which for lack of a better word was BLAH! The sense of humor Tori showed via text was not her in-person vibe and all of Keegan’s jokes failed drastically. But Keegan being Keegan was determined to be liked (he thinks he’s the greatest thing on earth and everyone likes him) he asked Tori to another spot after dinner called Red Rooster. There they salsa danced and laughed until tears rolled down their eyes at very dark humorous jokes, that they should probably not share. That night they quickly learned there was no romantic attraction but it was the beginning of a fruitful friendship…they hung out, talked about people they were dating, spent hours venting about life in the park and became each other’s go-to. The friendship was beautiful and innocent until one day during Winter 2015 something shifted and the person they once saw as only a friend started to become really attractive (like damn gina) and then feelings began to arise. During this time Keegan tried to have his cake and eat it too because he wasn’t ready to retire his bachelor card, but Tori was not down for the Okie-Doke. So they decided to continue keeping their options open and remained friends. Which didn’t last long because they both don’t like sharing and are low-key-crazy. So after they both stated they love each other on their Valentine’s Day date…Keegan got some sense and asked Tori to officially be his girlfriend on leap day, February 29, 2016 (to avoid celebrating every year) …and the rest is history!
Tell us your proposal story! It was May of 2019 when they woke up. He tried to make her look basic in these streets but she got cute anyways. They went on a surprise date at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. He was taking photos of her in the Japanese garden in front of the Torii gate (because he speaks Japanese & it’s her name). She looked down and he was on his knee. Random children tried to sit behind her and they finally got out of the way. He put the ring on the wrong finger (he was shaking nervously). She was like “babe wrong finger” and he was like “sorry, I’ve never done this before”. He finally put the ring on her finger and asked her to marry him. She says YES! When she looks up the “very nice black man” who she thought was a stranger was actually their close friend recording the entire moment. The day was truly thoughtful and he finally surprised her after 3+ years of trying.
Describe your engagement session. We explored places in Brooklyn that gave a vintage and historic feel for our engagement shoot. Keegan is from Trinidad but grew up in Brooklyn so he always wanted Tori (a Texas-raised Caymanian) to love his borough just as much as he does. The day was filled with creativity, laughs, and love.
What did you do on your first date? We went to Corner Social in Harlem & Salsa danced at Red Rooster afterward.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? Travel, Netflix & chill, come up with investment ideas.
How has wedding planning been so far? It has been great! Tori loves to plan experiences and host people.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day. Seeing many of our close friends and family experience the continent of Africa for the first time.
