The first meeting…
Funto and Dapo first met in Lagos in 2013 at a mutual friend’s wedding. A bunch of their friends were attending and Dapo happened to drive everyone to the venue. At the time, the pair were both in other relationships and didn’t speak. But this wasn’t the end of their story.
A second chance…
About two years later, the pair were both living in the United Kingdom in different cities. Funto recalls: “I was single and he had just gotten out of a relationship… [ironically,] the same friend who invited me for the wedding in 2013 and another mutual friend tried setting us up.” At the time, they both weren’t interested in a relationship. “It felt more like a rebound situation.”
And so, they remained apart.
A fateful birthday party…
In 2015, they crossed paths again at a birthday party. It had been so long that they’d forgotten they even met back in 2013! They had small talk and exchanged numbers, but didn’t speak until a week later.
Funto says: “We began texting and speaking every now and then as we remained friends and he would come by to see me every now and then, or we would hangout.”
While their relationship slowly progressed, Funto had made a rule for herself. “I wasn’t going to just introduce any guy to my family, except if it was something serious.”
So, anytime Dapo came to see her, he had to park outside her families house. Everything was going to plan until Dapo showed up to her house as she and her mom were getting home. Seeing Dapo, her mom asked her: “Who is this guy that keep showing up to see you and I haven’t met him?” Funto later told Dapo about her mom’s comments and told him not to park so close next time. To her surprise, he said he’d like to meet her.
Funto laughed it off and told him no. However, months later she “found out he had gone to [her] mom’s office to introduce himself as the guy that’s always parked outside [her] house… [and] properly introduced himself, name and all.”
Funto says: “That move and other things, especially his love for family, made me realize his intentionality about wanting to be with me.”

The proposal…
For Dapo, “2020 was a year which gave us time to reflect deeply on life and for me it made me reflect deeply on what I want in life, and it was HER.”
For his proposal, Dapo had big plans! First, he had a custom ring designed for Funto in summer 2020. Then he started to think of the most romantic ways to “ask her to spend forever with [him]”.
The couple had always wanted a more intimate and private proposal. Keeping this in mind, his first thought was a candlelight dinner on a beach in Lagos.
He says: “Then I’m like nah, I need to go big, so I had it all booked and planned out, private dinner on a beach in Doha. I had booked it all for December 2020 and then realized we couldn’t get into Doha [because of COVID].”
Not being able to get into Doha drastically changed his plans. He quickly looked for another location and soon set his sights on one of his favorite city’s in the world: London. He recalls: “I called up my very good friend Abi, and we went over my plans and idea, and it was all set; a romantic private dinner at The Shard.”
Unfortunately, COVID kept getting in the way. The government announced a lockdown in December 2020 and he had to cancel his plans. Dapo wouldn’t give up! “I was like the devil works hard, but God works harder, so I started thinking of alternatives.”
He remembered that Funto had wanted a particular bag for a long time. So he took her shopping and when they got home he quickly unwrapped and unboxed the bag. He writes: “imagine how they diffuse bombs in action movies, that was me working my way through to get to the bag.”
Once he got in, he hid the ring inside and put everything back together so Funto wouldn’t be suspicious. After contemplating waiting to propose while away with friends for Christmas, he decided “what a better time to propose to this woman than now.”
After an hour of convincing Funto to unbox the bag and another 15 for her to open it, she saw the box inside and asked what it was. In that moment, Dapo “went on one knee and asked her if she would spend the rest of her life with [him].” She said yes in a heartbeat!
