Sonya and Nick’s tropical outdoor wedding in Los Angeles features bright tropical florals, unique travel-themed decor, and Jamaican influences!
The couple first met on their college campus. After a few casual dates and hanging out they quickly became attached and their love only grew more from there. Nick surprised Sonya with a romantic beachside proposal during sunset.
He went on one knee and said, “Te Casarias Conmigo?” I immediately said, “si.”

Sonya and Nick hosted their tropical outdoor wedding at Sonya’s family’s home in Los Angelas. The property was beautifully decorated with summery tropical florals and foliage, along with nods to Jamaican culture. The vintage, travel-themed decor gave their wedding a unique, whimsical feeling all of its own.

How did you meet?
We met at school, on a college campus. We were friends at first then we started to do small outings like hikes, picnics on campus, and farmer markets. After that, we became super attached.
Tell us about the proposal
We were visiting Nicolas’ family on the weekend and he wanted to take me to the beach but I was confused about why he was taking me there because I was super tired. Haha. He wanted to catch the sunset, so the closer we got, the more nervous I felt. Then when we got there, he was rushing me to this huge rock on the beach, then I became suspicious and my heart began to pound. He went on one knee and said, “Te Casarias Conmigo?” I immediately said, “si.” Then he pointed out that my best friend came to the beach to take secret photos of the proposal, then I broke down with happy tears. It was a beautiful day.
Wedding Style
My wedding attire was inspired by tropical feels and minimalism with a little bit of a vintage feel. I picked a strapless silky dress with a long train. I wanted simple but very elegant. For the after party, I changed into a jewel short white dress that I thrifted. It had more of a vintage look to it, but I loved it. For Nicolas, we went with a light brown suit. It matched his complexion super well and then for the after party, he put on a dark brown vest with brown Levi jeans to combat the heat and for lots of dancing. The shopping experience was quite fun, I think personally my wedding dress alterations were more stressful than actually shopping for it.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding day?
My family is from Jamaica so we added a traditional Jamaican wedding cake and many native tropical flowers. My husband is Mexican so we wanted to incorporate some yummy Mexican food and beautiful Spanish music. We are both family oriented so we wanted a beautiful blend of both cultures, so catering to both sides of our family was very important and special as well.
What is your best memory from your wedding?
We loved our reception and just being able to have family around us, good food, lots of dancing, including the money dance, and having wonderful live music. Honestly, we loved every part of it.
What is the best advice you can give to engaged couples?
Create a wedding that you will truly enjoy and relax while spending time with your guests. Take many pictures with your guests to make it more personal. In my thank you cards, I included images that I had with my guests to make it more precious.
