Alma & Khurram’s wedding at La Maison in Belleville, NJ, was a celebration of Dominican and Jamaican culture with lux decor including a flower and candle wall, gorgeous centerpieces, and classy furniture with gold details.
The cultures and families were blended beautifully and you could really feel the love and acceptance.”

Alma and Khurram looked so in love on their wedding day! They said “I-do” in front of 180 of their friends and family in Belleville, New Jersey. The luxurious venue, La Maison, was the perfect backdrop for their black-tie affair. The bride, Alma, impressively created the entire floor plan and design aesthetic for her wedding herself! Their Wedding Planner, Unique Schulters of Unique’s Dream Weddings, used Alma’s precise vision to bring their dream wedding to life and Lily Szabo Photography beautifully captured every moment.
Another highlight of the day was simply the thoughtful blending of their cultures. As Alma is of Dominican descent and Khurram is Jamaican, they wanted to make it known how accepting they are of each other’s backgrounds. To do so, they had 2 cakes, one Jamaican rum cake and another with traditional Dominican flavors. They also hired a bilingual DJ so everyone would feel included in celebrating their special day.

Their first look…
The proposal
For our proposal, I planned a private dinner where I had a chef make us 4 courses of food, paired with wine from Spain. I blindfolded Alma and drove her to this lovely experience in the chef’s backyard. It eventually started to rain, so it made the ambiance even more pleasant.
Instead of having a guestbook for guests to sign the couple had an old-fashioned telephone, where guests can pick up, dial a number, and leave a voice message for the couple, which would be left on a recorder, that they could go back and listen to. I thought that was super sweet and different.”

The ceremony…
Wedding attire…
The dress was from David’s Bridal and Khurram’s suit was from the Tux Guys. The color story was black and white with hints of gold so Khurram also wore a white suit jacket and all of the bridal party wore all black.
The Reception…
Cultural elements…
I’m Dominican and he’s Jamaican which is a very big part of who we are so wanted ensure that we captured both of our cultures through out the big day. We had 2 wedding cakes, one Dominican and 1 Jamaican rum cake, we had a bilingual DJ so my Spanish family would be able to understand and feel included in certain elements, and our first dance was a blend between traditional R&B and a salsa song.
Best wedding day memory…
Alma: Having everyone who hasn’t been together for a long time. Seeing everyone happy and celebrating love
Khurram: Everyone having a blast together! Just everyone dancing, singing, and enjoying themselves with the entertainment.
Wedding advice for other engaged couples…
Continuously work on your communication skills with your partner. The work is never done but progress will be made steadily. Couples therapy is a blessing and doesn’t need to be used only if you’re having issues.
Another highlight was definitely the surprise they had for their guest with the hora loca. They had about 5-6 entertainers including a giant transformer robot come in and really get the guests hyped. The performers were amazing and really got the party going by blowing up balloons, playing limbo, etc.”
