This moody art-infused styled shoot at the 21C Museum Hotel in Durham, North Carolina, Features contemporary art and historic architecture.
MunaCoterie member, In His Image Photography, captures the essence of real-love romance in this elegant styled shoot. The intimate shoot was expertly designed by Jennifer Murphy of Weddings Made To Order. The duo, along with a talented vendor team, crafted wedding inspiration that is both sophisticated and visually striking.
Set in the 21c Museum Hotel, models AJ and Johvone posed as bride and groom before various backdrops, including the hotel’s onsite restaurant, Counting House, the lobby featuring contemporary art and bespoke lounge furniture and decor, and in a cozy but sophisticated penthouse overlooking the city. The most dramatic photos were captured in the hotel’s grand ballroom. This elegantly moody space was once a historic bank lobby!
I hope these images inspire others to bring a touch of artsy, modern flair to their wedding celebrations. The 21c Museum Hotel is a truly unique and stunning venue perfect for couples who want to infuse their special day with creativity and uniqueness.”

Choosing a Location…
As a wedding planner, I always look for new and unique ways to inspire my couples on their special day. When I met the amazing team at the stunning 21C Museum Hotel in Durham, NC, I knew it would be the perfect backdrop for a styled shoot that would be both sophisticated and visually striking. This unique venue combines contemporary art with a beautifully restored, historic building, and it provided the perfect setting for our wedding-themed shoot.
The bride & groom…
The venue…
Located in the heart of downtown Durham, the 21C Museum Hotel is more than just a place to stay. It’s also an art museum featuring exhibitions from some of our most talented contemporary artists. With its sleek and modern design, the hotel provides the perfect contrast to the traditional elements of a wedding, making it a truly one-of-a-kind setting for any celebration!
A vision of art & culture…
For the shoot, I wanted to focus on incorporating the hotel’s art, history, and contemporary details into the overall theme and aesthetic. We worked with a talented team of vendors to bring the vision to life, including a florist who created stunning arrangements using minimalistic color to mimic the moody hues in the hotel’s grand ballroom that was once a historic bank lobby.
The details…
To enhance the romantic atmosphere, we incorporated a focal sweetheart table situated under the bold chandeliers centering the ballroom. Not to mention soft details such as flowing off-white fabrics, rouge velvet napkins, delicate blush floral arrangements, and candlelit details. The bride and groom were dressed in elegant, timeless attire, with the bride in a graceful yet drama-inspired gown and the groom in a handsome timeless suit.
A romantic walkabout…
As the shoot progressed, we explored different areas of the hotel. We captured the couple in intimate moments against the backdrop of the hotel’s stunning architecture in their onsite restaurant, Counting House, their museum throughout the hotel, and bespoke lounge furniture and decor.
With the warm, golden light of the setting sun in the streets of downtown Durham, we were able to capture the couple exchanging gazes in a cozy but sophisticated penthouse overlooking downtown Durham’s city line, surrounded by the historic charm of the hotel.

I love this style of wedding photography. Simple but very beautiful. I wanted the bride and groom to be the focus of the photo instead of the scene being too gorgeous.
