Keyona and Steven’s modern boho chic wedding is featured in Issue No. 29!
When Keyona and Steven met in college, they would have never guessed what was in store for them in the future. Their first interaction was brief; “far from the beginning of a love story,” Keyona shares. The second time they met was a year later at an Atlanta Greek Picnic. They exchanged numbers, but neither texted until two years later when one of Keyona’s IG posts caught Steven’s eye. Once they started talking, they couldn’t stop!
Steven always told Keyona he wouldn’t propose on a holiday or birthday. Using this to his advantage, he decided to surprise Keyona by proposing on her 31st birthday! As they walked through Central Park after having drinks and taking in the city skyline, Steven stopped at Bethesda Terrace. Enjoying the view of the lake, Keyona had no suspicions, so when she turned around to see Steven on his knee, she was shocked and overcome with happiness.
Keyona and Steven held their wedding in North Carolina, the bride’s home state. Their modern boho chic wedding featured lovely mauve, green, neutral tones, and whimsical florals, which perfectly complimented the bride’s, groom’s, and wedding party’s gorgeous attire. They made priceless memories celebrating their love and danced the night away with family and friends.

How they met…
The first time we laid eyes on each other was in 2011 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Steven had recently transferred from Morehouse College and was completing his dual degree program in Engineering at North Carolina A&T. I was attending the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and majoring in Nursing. Our first interaction was brief and far from the beginning of a love story.
We met again in 2012 at an Atlanta Greek Picnic and exchanged numbers. Steven didn’t text me immediately but always commented under my Instagram photos. I was not catching the “hint” that he was actually trying to get my attention through the flirtatious comments.
Fast forward to February 10th, 2014, I went to the gym and posted a quick selfie. The gym selfie really caught Steven’s attention because he went through his phone and found what he thought was my number; and as fate would have it, he was right. I opened my phone at work to a message from Steven saying “Hey, what’s up? I knew I had your number.” The rest is history.
The proposal…
Steven proposed on my birthday (7/2/2021) at the Bethesda Terrace fountain in Central Park. This was a private moment between the two of us. He hired Temilola Photo to capture the entire moment without me even noticing. I was shocked and blown away and of course, I said “YES!”.
The moment and scenery were perfect for our intimate moment. I was not expecting the proposal although it was my birthday. He always makes special plans for my birthday so I thought nothing when he said “Dress nice for a day filled with surprises”.
How did you know they were “the one”?
I knew Steven was the one when he drove from Kansas City, Kansas, to Greensboro, North Carolina, to spend two days with me.
Did you incorporate culture into your wedding?
No specific culture was incorporated into the ceremony. During the reception, we had the DJ play a Caribbean set to honor my Husband’s Trinidadian background.
Wedding style
Our wedding style was modern bohemian flare.
Wedding dress and favorite accessory…
My wedding dress was a Casablanca gown. The silhouette was a fit and flare with a strapless sweetheart neckline with beaded lace throughout the entire bodice. My favorite wedding accessory was my hair piece that I was lucky enough to find on Amazon as a last-minute addition.
What is your best memory from your wedding?
My best memory from the wedding was the reception and really having fun with our guests. Our reception room reveal was also one of my favorite memories. It was so beautiful and beyond my expectations.
What is the best advice you can give to engaged couples?
My advice to engaged couples is to do whatever you desire. You only get one wedding day. This is your day so do not let others’ opinions overshadow what you want.
How was your experience with wedding planning?
We had an amazing team and vendors for our day. Our wedding planner can do any and everything. He and his team did our planning, design, décor, and florals. We could not have asked for a better experience.
