JJ and Asha welcomed guests to a regal, Bridgerton-inspired affair that mixed authentic Gullah-infused details with romance and chic modern decor for this glamourous Charleston wedding.
Their gorgeously themed springtime wedding featured Gullah Parties By Barbara with lovely details and nods to southern culture mixed with the traditional vibes of the English Regency era.
We couldn’t help but give a proper bow to details like the bridal party’s formal evening gloves and dainty fans to complete the Bridgerton look!

How we met…
We met in Washington, DC at our alma mater, American University.
Popping the question…
JJ planned a “baecation” in the summer of 2021 to Martha’s Vineyard. We spent a long weekend enjoying Oak Bluffs, the beach, and touring the island. On the last night, JJ proposed at the edge of the rocks at sunset on Menemsha Beach.
Our style…
JJ and I were inspired by the aesthetics of Regency England, as displayed in the Netflix hit series, Bridgerton. Asha went with a classic, regal look, and JJ had a dramatic outfit change from a formal, Black tux for the ceremony and a custom-made violet jacket for the reception.
Celebrating our culture…
Given the historical significance of Charleston, SC, we wanted to honor our ancestors and the rich traditions of African-American culture. We incorporated libations in our unity ceremony, led by our dear friend who has a connection to Gullah culture as a Sierra Leonian immigrant.
Our wedding planner is local to Charleston and specializes in Gullah-infused events. Our bouquets and boutonnieres were handwoven sweetgrass and our reception chef was award-winning low country cuisine chef, BJ Dennis, who has been featured on Netflix’s “High on the Hog”.
Here she comes…
I choose you…
We did it…
What we loved the best was…
Our first dance! We spent six weeks preparing it and our guests were pleasantly surprised. We felt like the only ones in the space.
Time to celebrate…
Our advice to you is…
Don’t lose sight of the relationship in the midst of your planning or wedding day! We enjoyed a private carriage ride right after we said “I do” in this same spirit–it’s important to remember the reason for the occasion and take the time to enjoy each other.
