On May 29th, 2017, Kevin and Alexis’s love story began while attending a mutual friend’s Memorial Day cookout. They met, played games, and flirted all night, but didn’t exchange numbers. Alexis (a self-proclaimed “Instagram Investigator”) got to sleuthing and found Kevin’s Instagram and sent him a friend request.
The couple, who are both members of Devine 9 (Alexis is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Kevin is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.), would officially come together after Alexis saw an IG post that read “@ a que you will act right for.” After only one interaction, she confidently @ Kevin under the post. Catching his attention, Kevin messaged her on IG and they exchanged numbers. Soon after they started dating.
Four years later, Kevin planned an extravagant surprise proposal at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse with their friends and family. However, things didn’t go according to plan when Alexis and her friends got Covid. Determined to still propose, Kevin came up with a plan b.
On December 18, 2021, Kevin recalls, “I set up a picnic for us in the park isolated from everyone on Alexis’ first day out of quarantine. I got Olive Garden to go with her favorite lunch, drinks, and dessert and told her I wanted her to get out of the house for fresh air. During the picnic, our parents and siblings arrived and I proposed. Alexis was shocked!”
The couple finally tied the knot on January 12th, 2024, in a modern Miami wedding designed by KeAira Chantell Events with enchanting green details and stylish attire.
Special highlights included Alexis’s father and stepfather both walking her down the aisle and tributes to the couple’s shared Black Greek culture through strolling and mini-step performances throughout the night. Surrounded by loved ones, it was truly the wedding of their dreams!

- Wedding flowers: roses in shades of mustard, toffee, and burnt orange, brown tulips, orange ranunculus, and gold-painted greenery
- Favorite item on the menu: My favorite item on the menu was the first course. It was burrata, tomatoes, watermelon, mint, and basil. It was delicious and different.
- Bridesmaids/groomsmen gifts: We gifted our groomsmen customized boxes with their names, roles, and the date of the wedding. Inside the box was a cigar and shot. We also gifted them their lapel pins, tie, and pocket square. For the bridesmaids, we gift the ladies customized bags with their names and included pajamas and their jewelry for the wedding. We also paid for their makeup.

- Advice for brides: My advice for brides is to eat and rest as much as you can beforehand. Another tip is to pick a wedding party that loves you genuinely. The wedding party is investing a lot of time and effort into the couple as well and if their heart is invested in the couple and love you, it will make the process easier. Also, don’t try to control everything. Trust your wedding planner and their team. I promise they will take care of you.
How did you meet?
On May 29, 2017, we attended our friend’s Asja and Myles Memorial Day cookout. We met through this couple being friends individually to them. The day we met, we played games with a group of friends and flirted all night. We didn’t exchange numbers that night, but being the Instagram investigator that I am, I found Kevin on Instagram and requested to be his friend.
We are both members of Divine 9. I am a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and Kevin is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. There was an Instagram post that said, “@ a que you will act right for”. I @ Kevin under the post after having one encounter with him. He messaged me on Instagram and we exchanged numbers and began dating.
The Proposal:
Kevin: Unbeknownst to Alexis, I planned an extravagant date night at Ruth’s Chris with our close family with hopes of proposing and an after-party at a venue with our friends. I ordered food, and drinks, and had decorations with the intent for it to be a surprise engagement party. Her maid of honor Damoneke helped me plan and we had friends coming in from out of town.
Well, it did not happen that way. Alexis celebrated her birthday in Atlanta, Georgia with her friends and caught COVID-19. Some of her friends who were coming into town for the engagement party also had covid. I had to cancel all reservations and plans to ensure the safety of Alexis, our family, and our friends.

How did you know they were “the one”?
Alexis: I knew Kevin was the one in the first year of our relationship. From my past relationship experience, it was chaos, but everything with us for the past 6 years has been very easy. It was easy to love him, bond with him, forgive him and grow with him. It was as if I had known him my entire life.
Kevin: Alexis made me feel loved and desired both emotionally and physically. Our spiritual connection to God made me realize she was the one for me.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding?
We had a very modern wedding with not many cultural incorporations, but more personalized touches to our family dynamic. I was given away by my father and stepfather. My stepfather has played a pivotal role in my life and it was important to me to have that moment with him and my dad.
Another personal touch was the first dance with my mom to one of our favorite songs. We danced to “Everything” by Mary J. Blige. Growing up, we would sing this song to each other often.
Black Greek culture was also an important part of our wedding. I am a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, my sorority sisters serenaded me and we had so much fun strolling to several songs. Kevin is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He and his fraternity brothers did a mini-step performance and hopped throughout the night.
Describe your wedding style:
Our wedding style was modern. We wanted the color green but didn’t want it to look like a forest. We wanted something more enchanted and stylish.
Describe your wedding dress and your favorite wedding accessory.
My wedding dress was ivory with beautiful thick material and covered with rhinestones that were sewn one by one. It was strapless with a sweetheart shape and a corset in the back to reveal my full figure. I had a very dramatic gown with lots of ruffles and a train.
The train was able to be removed and my dress stopped right above my knees to be the perfect reception dress. The day before my wedding I was given a diamond tennis bracelet from my uncle. It came with a thoughtful message and was my favorite accessory to wear at my wedding.
What is your best memory from your wedding?
Alexis: My best memory was the first dance. I have known since The Emancipation of Mimi was released that “Joy Ride” would be my first dance song. I was eleven when this album was released and it is one of my favorite albums. To be in the moment dancing to the song on my wedding day that I would dance with the broom with as a kid was surreal. Especially to be with the love of my life!
Kevin: The best memory from the wedding was having all the people that we love under one roof with plenty of alcohol!
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples?
The best advice we can give to wedding couples is to have the wedding they want. Social media and family influences sometimes try to convince us that weddings are a waste of money, but we believe if you want to have the wedding of your dreams, do it.
It is a sacrifice and requires discipline for sure, but keep what you want at the forefront. Whoever is supposed to be there and share that moment with you, will! Also, pray for discernment, each other, and over your finances. Pray before things get heavy/hard.
