Adirah and Rashaan whisked themselves away for an adventurous elopement in the Valley of Fire in Las Vegas!
Adirah and Rashaan were first introduced at Rashaan’s cousin’s birthday party. Throughout the party they shared glances, but neither made the first move. Rashaan’s aunt and Adirah’s best friend noticed and intervened, not letting them miss their chance.
We were both standing around just looking at each other but not saying anything and my aunt and her best friend grabbed us up and said “Here why don’t you guys meet, you’re both single.”.
– Rashaan
After six loving years together, Rashaan planned the perfect surprise proposal for Adirah. She suspected Rashaan might propose on 11/11 because of her belief in angel numbers, but the 11th of November came and went and there was no proposal. Adirah brushed it off and on November 14th she enjoyed her usual birthday celebrations with her daughter and Rashaan.
After dinner, they went home to have cake. Rashaan asked Adirah’s daughter to place a plastic ring on the cake just as they finished putting on the candles. Then, Rashaan pulled the real ring out of his pocket and asked Adirah to marry him. Adirah and her daughter were overcome with happiness.
Everything seemed normal… Then he handed my daughter a toy ring and told her to place it on top of the cake as he got on his knee with the real ring to ask me to marry him…we screamed and cried and I said “YES!”. It was intimate and very meaningful to me.

For their long-awaited wedding day, Adirah and Rashaan, along with their daughter as their witness, took a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon and into the Valley of Fire to elope on top of a stunning desert mountain. After saying “I do”, they continued the celebration with champagne and cake.

How did you meet?
We met at his cousin’s birthday party, which was my 1st cousin’s Godfather. We were both standing around just looking at each other but not saying anything and my aunt and her best friend grabbed us up and said “Here why don’t you guys meet, you’re single.”. He started smiling ear to ear and asked me to walk to my car. We walked to the car with my arm intertwined in his like we had known each other for years since I couldn’t walk in my heels. The next morning we had our first date, which was breakfast.
Tell us about the proposal.
The proposal was on my birthday November 14th. It was entering around the 6-year mark of our relationship and I’m big on angel numbers such as 11/11 so when that day came I thought that would be the day but it wasn’t so I just brushed it off. I have a daughter with whom my now husband has helped me raise since three years old and at the time of my proposal she was eight years old.
So they took me out to Ruth Chris, my favorite and our Birthday tradition, and acted so normal. When we got home they carried on, acting normal, and baked me a cake. This is also our birthday tradition in my house. Everything seemed normal, they iced the cake put sprinkles on, and started loading the candles.
Then he handed my daughter a toy ring and told her to place it on top of the cake as he got on his knee with the real ring to ask me to marry him. I was in shock as well as my daughter, we screamed and cried and I said “YES!”. It was intimate and very meaningful to me.
What was the wedding shopping experience like?
I had shopped online for months and had an idea of what I wanted but couldn’t find it in stores. I fell in love with my dress the first time I saw it but was scared to impulse buy it, so I didn’t. Then, I went to NYC to attempt to buy material to remake or create the exact dress I wanted because I dreamed of a pink dress but couldn’t find what I liked. So I ended up back at square one with the first dress I fell in love with and knew I wanted from the first fitting. This all took about three months to decide lol.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding?
I didn’t incorporate any culture on my wedding day, but I initially always intended to. I had always said if ever got married I’d wear my natural hair to show and display my true love for myself and my culture, especially since I have locs and my daughter is also natural. Well, as we got pressed for time since it was a destination wedding and I wasn’t bringing a glam team, I needed to have a quick alternative. So I changed ideas quickly.
What is your favorite memory of your wedding?
My best memory from my wedding was being so nervous, it rained which I hear is good luck and I accidentally put the ring on the right hand until he said wrong hand lol.
What’s the best advice you can give to engaged couples?
The best advice I can give to engaged couples is to take your time, breathe, and take notes everywhere and every time you have an idea. This will help you stay organized.
