By only chance, Nia and Cameron were able to find true love through a series of fortunate events; an algorithm of favorite movies, the perfect restaurant – they even realized their relatives had something in common. Nia describes it as, “an almost unbelievable number of coincidences.”
The Windy City matchmaking did its part to align them together on Hinge and that’s where the fireworks and nonstop fun started. As they first bonded over a comedy film and their first date at a restaurant paying homage to Nia’s homeland, they continued this perfect formula with dinner and movie dates.
With determination and a Mamba Mentality, Cameron joined forces with their relatives to set the perfect scene for Nia. On the sandy shores of Martha’s Vineyard, he finally popped the question and Nia said YES! And Cameron, not being one to settle, continued to wow Nia with a pre-scheduled photoshoot.
From there, Mila captured their love from their Windy City meet-cute to the wind flowing through Nia’s hair at Edgartown Lighthouse.

How did you meet?
I had just moved to Chicago in the dead of winter from Houston—a move I wasn’t exactly excited about. With the freezing temps keeping me cooped up inside, I figured I’d give Hinge a shot, thinking, What’s the worst that could happen? (Enter Cameron—the best thing that ever happened).
Meanwhile, as Cameron scrolled through Hinge, he came to an abrupt stop when he saw my profile and noticed I had listed my job as working at “The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can’t Read Good.” Being a fellow movie geek, he immediately got the Zoolander reference and thought it was hilarious.
From that fateful swipe to now, our love story has been filled with laughter, adventure, and an almost unbelievable number of coincidences—like our dads sharing the same birthday and our grandmothers having the same name (shoutout to the Dorothys!).
What did you do on your first date?
If you haven’t noticed by now, I love a good reference! Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, I was seriously impressed when, for our first date in Chicago, Cameron took me to The Delta—a Wicker Park restaurant that pays homage to the flavors of the Mississippi Delta. I thought, Wow, this man really did his research! Turns out, he had just randomly picked the spot—pure coincidence! But it made for a great date nonetheless, followed by drinks at a bar down the street.
The proposal:
On August 8, 2024, (because, as my fiancé emphatically put it, “It’s Kobe!”), he popped the question during a stunning sunset on Menemsha Beach in Martha’s Vineyard.
Martha’s Vineyard has always been a special place for both of us, a shared destination from our childhoods that feels like a second home. So when he told me we were taking a “casual stroll” along the beach, I thought it was just another perfect evening on the island. Little did I know, this “casual stroll” was anything but!
Unbeknownst to me, our sisters had been running the show behind the scenes, choreographing every detail of the big moment. Meanwhile, both of our parents were on FaceTime, watching the magic unfold live. As the golden hues of the sunset painted the sky, he dropped to one knee and asked me to spend forever with him.
It was romantic, nostalgic, and slightly chaotic in the best way—just the way we like it. It was a moment where time seemed to stand still, with our favorite people, a breathtaking view, and a lifetime of love ahead.
Describe your engagement session. Did you have a theme?
Our engagement session was a total surprise! Right after Cameron proposed, he told me that we had an engagement shoot scheduled for the very next day at the Edgartown Lighthouse. The beach was breathtaking, the moment felt romantic and magical, and the entire day was nothing short of perfect. Our photographer, Mila, made us feel completely at ease, and I especially appreciated how she made me feel beautiful—because after an hour of battling the wind and humidity, my hair had fully embraced the frizz!
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Movies have always been a big part of our relationship, so one of our favorite date nights is catching a classic theater experience, and then indulging in Chicago’s incredible food scene!
How has wedding planning been so far?
Wedding planning has been an incredible journey! We’re beyond excited to celebrate our special day in Portugal. As someone who loves a good reference, it’s been amazing to get creative in weaving in meaningful tributes—honoring those who can’t be there with us, our first loves (his being golf, mine being cooking), and the loved ones who will be celebrating by our side. We can’t wait to see it all come to life and to witness our guests’ reactions to everything we’ve planned!
