Roses and candles always set the perfect mood for a romantic proposal, and Alex had all the right elements when he proposed to Lela. He treated Lela to a day of pampering, and when she came home, she was greeted with a path of roses and tea candles that led to their bedroom. At the end of the path was Alex, waiting on one knee ready to ask Lela to be his wife! This fun loving couple decided to have a unique movie themed wedding, which they brought to life with movie posters, and gourmet popcorn favors. How They Met/The Proposal
Alex and I met in high school. We had the same circle of friends, so it was only natural we became friends as well. It wasn’t until ten years later that our friendship flourished into much more.
When it came time to propose, Alex knew in order to surprise me, he would have to be stealthy and unassuming to get me out of our apartment. He figured the best way to do this was to treat me to getting my hair and nails done. Once I left for my day of beauty, he quickly jumped in his car to go and buy rose petals to go with small tea candles he bought earlier in the week. When he came back home, he created a path of rose petals that were flanked on either side by the lit candles leading to the bedroom. At the end of the rose petal path he placed the ring in the center of a circle of burning candles and shut the door. When I returned home, the illuminated path welcomed me. I was still slightly clueless as to what was going on, but as I opened the bedroom door, it became clear. Alex picked-up the ring, got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife. Amid my happy tears, I said, “Yes.”
Description of the Event
Alex and I were pretty lost when it came time to plan the wedding. Using online wedding tools, we determined the budget and logistics; however, we needed more guidance. My mother suggested creating a theme.
After tossing around a few ideas, we settled on a movie theme. We love going to the movies and it was only fitting that we share what we love on our special day. From then on, our wedding planning was fairly easy. We ditched the cheesy movie themes of the past and brought out a more elegant, yet fun way of presenting our theme. For instance, instead of the traditional wedding program, we decided to write our program in the form of a script which coincided perfectly with the ceremony; instead of table numbers to seat our guests, we used miniature movie posters that represented the movies we saw together; we used Photoshop to superimpose our faces on our favorite movie posters which were posted around the cocktail area; and our guests were treated to favors of mini-popcorn boxes filled with delicious gourmet popcorn.
My best friend, owner of Ciao Bella Weddings, was also very instrumental in sharing ideas and also making our ideas come to life.
We had a goal that our wedding must reflect us and we feel that is exactly what we accomplished. The venue was perfect, flowers radiant and the small touches of our movie theme were perfect.
Wedding Style
I’m the rare type of woman that does not care for shopping and I often have a hard time making decisions when buying clothing, so I went dress shopping fairly early into wedding planning in anticipation of it taking a long time to find the right dress. I gathered my bridesmaids and mom for the first weekend of wedding dress shopping. We went to four stores and at the last store, Bel Fiore we found the perfect dress. It was a Robin Jillian dress that fit perfectly on my silhouette. The top half of the dress was a mix of shimmering pearls and sparkling crystals and the satin bottom flowed gracefully – like a movie star.
Incorporation of Culture
It would be hard for Alex and me not to incorporate culture into our wedding. I am from a multi-cultural family, my father is Guyanese-Indian and my mother is African-American. Alex’s family is Liberian. I wore henna on my hands, to celebrate my Indian heritage; however, we celebrated our cultures through music. Our DJ played Liberian music while we did the Grand March, along with a mix of Indian and Soca music, R & B and Hip-Hop had everyone on the dance floor all night.
Most Memorable Part of the Day
Having our entire family present in one room made it memorable. Our friends and family flew to Atlanta from various; states, countries and even continents just to celebrate with us! We could really feel all of the love in the room.

From the groom… I love Lela’s sense of humor. I can always depend on her to make me laugh and smile.
From the Bride…I’m naturally a worrier; however, I never have to worry about anything when I’m with him. He provides and protects so well, that it’s impossible to be apprehensive.’
