Last year my sister became engaged and it was one of the happiest moments of my life. Although we are 3 years apart she is my best friend, I am ecstatic that she found someone who deserves all her awesomeness. Once all the fanfare wore off I started thinking about the wedding logistically, mainly who she would pick as her Maid of Honor or MOH. She has a great core group of friends, each would be perfect for the job, but deep down I knew I wanted it to be me. I have never been in a bridal party and have only attended one wedding, but I wanted to share those special moments planning with her that we could laugh about long after the wedding was over. She unofficially told her friends and I that I was her MOH, but during the summer she held a bridesmaids luncheon to formally ask everyone to be in the wedding party. It was a lovely day she ordered brunch, gave each of us a handmade invitation, and told everyone that she wholeheartedly believed that I would be an amazing MOH and they should too. Being a MOH is a lot of work there are many things I do not know, but at the end of the day no matter your age or experience, it is incredible to be a major part in one of the most important days in a woman’s life. In the posts that follow I’ll be giving you tips, answering your questions and updating you on my experience as a first time MOH.
Tips on picking a maid of honor
- Make sure they know you. My sister said one of the main reasons she picked me is because I know the most important people in her life and I know most of the things she loves/hates.
- You’re in charge of who’s in your bridal party. Although I’m glad I was chosen as my sister’s MOH, don’t feel obligated to choose a family member if you had someone else in mind. This is your day don’t worry about hurting anyone’s feelings do what you think is best for you and the bridal party.
- Choose someone who won’t try and be the Beyonce of the evening! Beyonce is flawless, but she will upstage anyone in her presence. Make sure your MOH and the other bridesmaids know this is your party and you won’t tolerate any foolishness. If someone tries to overstep their boundaries let them know they are not irreplaceable!
