I have fewer bridesmaids than groomsmen. I just don’t find it necessary to exert time/energy in selecting people that I don’t really want standing next to me at the alter. Besides, the focus will be on me anyway :)

For pictures it doesn’t look great but you should only have the people you truly want to share that experience with standing next to you even if it’s an uneven number. Great Wedding Coordinators know how to work around this issue to create a great processional and photos!
