Nakia Brown felt like Cinderella when she married Vacshon Brown in the Fall. On a bright, gorgeous day in Baltimore, MD, surrounded by an abundance of garden roses, family, and friends, the couple said, “I do” after dating for over thirteen years. Serenaded by R&B singer, RaHeem DeVaughn, Nakia and Vacshon’s wedding day was quite the celebration!
Wedding Day: September 21, 2014
Wedding Location: The Grand Historic Venue in Baltimore Maryland
First Song Dance: “You” by Jessie Powell
Favorite Item on the Wedding Menu: Nakia says the honey glazed salmon was delicious while Vacshon enjoyed the wedding cake the most.
Wedding Style
I adored my wedding dress. I wore The Penelope, a romantic Ivory gown by Sottero & Midgley. This stunning gown had a dropped waist and was a beautifully layered skirt with fanned pleats. It had a corset lace up in the back and a sweetheart neckline on the front. One of my favorite accents was the gorgeous Swarovski crystals arranged at my left hip. As for my favorite wedding accessory? I’d have to say the insanely gorgeous shoes I wore! The Peep Toe Christian Louboutin Pumps were covered in hand placed Swarovski crystals. They’re every girl’s dream shoes and I know it may sound cliché, but they truly made the dress and made me feel like Cinderella on my wedding day.
Bridesmaids/Groomsmen Gifts
The bridesmaids received Swarovski Crystal Headbands which they wore on the day of the wedding. The groomsmen wore Seaward and Stearn Pocket Squares.
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
I can remember it like it was yesterday and it was well over thirteen years ago. I used to see him often in my neighborhood but I was too afraid to say anything to him. This one particular day, I was with my cousin, Wednsdy, and we saw him…..Vacshon. Wednsdy couldn’t take it anymore so she stopped him, told him how much I liked him, and that I talked about him all the time. From that day on, it was history in the making.
It was Christmas Eve in 2013 and I had fallen asleep on the sofa waiting for Vacshon to get in from work so we could finish wrapping family gifts. Vacshon came home and gently woke me up and nervously stated there was something important we needed to discuss. After a few attempts of fumbling over his words, he took my hand and began saying the most beautiful things to me, telling me how much he loved me and how he’d been waiting for this day to come for a long time. He knelt down on one knee, held my hand and asked if I would accept his hand in marriage. I was very emotional at this point and I think I said yes before he even finished his question! We hugged each other as I was overcome with tears of joy.
Christmas is a very emotional time of year for us because it’s Vacshon’s mother’s birthday and she passed away in 2006. He said to me, “My mother always said you were the one for me and that you were going to be her daughter.” I had also recently lost my grandmother and Godmother from cancer and Vaschon told me about how he had conversations with them both before they passed. Vacshon said they knew he was going to propose to me and they told him to take very good care of me as they knew they wouldn’t be here to see our wedding day.
Memories
My fondest memory from our wedding was the speech that my Maids of Honor gave during the reception. All three of them spoke and represented a very special person in my life that I had lost. My sister represented my Mother, my dear friend represented my Godmother, and my cousin represented my Grandmother. All three of these women meant the world to me and I would have given anything to have them with me on my wedding day. I first cried tears of sorrow knowing they were not there with me but those quickly turned to tears of happiness and love as they were remembered so eloquently.
We also had the soulful R&B singer, RaHeem DeVaughn perform during our reception. It was a huge surprise to all of our guests as only myself, Vacshon, and our wedding planner knew. When he came out to perform, our guests jumped out of their seats in awe! The look on their faces and excitement they had were truly priceless.

Hire a wedding planner! Take all of the stress off of you so you can enjoy this time with your fiancé and family. MODE Events was the best throughout this process! Brandon was amazing from beginning to end. From our initial conversation, he took notes of what I wanted and incorporated every single thing into my ceremony. When I walked into my reception for the first time, it literally took my breath away. It was amazing to see what I had originally envisioned become reality.
