How did you meet?
We met on a bus on the way to Carnival in Binghamton during our first year at St. John’s University. My two friends Candace and Emeline thought that I should make friends on the trip. They told me to talk to the guy sitting in front of me, even though he sat next to one of them. I really did not know what to say so I just asked what time it was. Not knowing that Leon was very observant and a little bit of a jerk, he replied, “Like it says, on your phone, in your hand.” So much for small talk! Even though it was not romantic or magical, we became fast friends.
Describe your first date.
Tasia: Living in Harlem, I would rarely get to see Leon unless I traveled to meet him at St. John’s University. Once I left school, seeing him became a once and a while occurrence. One Saturday, my job at the time chose to have a professional development event at Dave and Buster’s in Westbury. Being that I knew Leon lived there, I mentioned the event and he happily agreed to come. After the event, we played games for hours, placing bets on who would win and cashing them out before he drove me home. This is something we still love to do till this day. Besides loving to dance to Soca together (which they would figure out quickly), we love to playing games. We are both pretty competitive!
Describe to us the proposal story.
Leon chose to propose to Tasia on her 30th birthday. When discussing this with his mother, the only one of the three people who know of the engagement, he knew it would be a birthday present she would never forget. However, Tasia had her own plans! She decided that they would take a trip to Antigua to celebrate. She went all out! All-Inclusive Hotel (Nonsuch Bay), bedroom suite, the works! Little did she know, this vacation would be better than she ever could have imagined! For Tasia, after eight years of dating, she felt she waited a long time to be engaged. On the morning of her birthday, after eight years of being together, she woke up excited. Leon had teased the entire trip that he forgot to give her a card but that he got her something better. Eager, Tasia asked what this gift he kept mentioning was and Leon asked if she was sure she wanted it. Annoyed, she answered yes. He said, “Okay, if you want it.” He went into the closet and pulled a box out of his left shoe. As Leon began recording Tasia with his phone, he placed the box next to her as she sat on the bed and told her to open it. That little bit of jerk she saw when they first met was still there. Tasia was taken aback. Too afraid of getting excited and opening the box to see it was a pair of earrings, Tasia was hesitant. With her being recorded, she did not want evidence of when she killed him if that was the case! Instead, she questioned, “What is this?!” He again told her to open the box. Tasia once more asked, “What is this?!” Leon again said, open it. Tasia afraid, asked if Leon could turn off the phone, which he ultimately did. Not until then did Leon stop, take the box and open it. At that point, Tasia was able to see that there was indeed a ring inside that box. Leon then got down on one knee and proposed and she thrillingly accepted!

Are there any interesting pieces of information you want to mention? Tasia: We got married on our TEN YEAR ANNIVERSARY.!On August 24th, 2008, we went out to celebrate his birthday. He asked me to be his girlfriend. He mentioned it would be tough but he knew we could get through it. That long night into the morning was quite eventful, but we have not looked back! Everyone loves Leon! He is just such a nice person that when all my friends see me they say, “Hey, Tasia” but if he comes around the corner it turns into, “OH MY GOD, it’s Leon!” Pretty much everyone they know can agree that Leon and I cannot be on the same team when we play Taboo, or honestly any other game, at any time — ever. #Dreamteam
What are your favorite items to receive from your fiance?
Leon: Tasia loves to receive those little tokens of affection I give her. I’ve grown to become affectionate when it comes to Tasia. I will send little messages telling her how I appreciate and love her, tell her how much I love her face and give her warm hugs. She loves that! I love getting time and attention from her. I enjoy our have fun-loving, adventures and that she just makes me laugh. It’s great we can just joke around with each other. I love Tasia and all that comes with her.
