In this Afro Boho styled Elopement in Detroit, Michigan, D’Isjah Lyon’s Photography captures the essence of Black Love in its purest form.
Set at the eclectic Detroit venue, the Psychedelic Healing Shack, D’Isjah was envisioning Black Love for her styled shoot. Stripped down to sensuous neutrals and warm earth tones, she wanted to capture Black love in its natural form. She shares, “I wanted to show intimacy in this styled elopement, meshing several ideas together – Boho, natural, dark, moody, and magical. We decided to go the route of no makeup at all and go natural. I wanted…the afro to stay as true to our roots as possible and show our hair in its natural state. Adding the flowers were a special touch!”
The outcome is refreshingly unique and yet reminiscent of an earlier time period with moody brown and beige hues evoking the style of vintage photographs. An intriguing sense of whimsy fills each frame as models, Nikeah and Tete, playfully emerge and fade in and out of shadows. Sky windows from above illuminate them as they move through the space with the tension and ease of long time lovers.

Inspiration…
“For this photo shoot, I wanted to put a spotlight on black love in a natural state. Meaning no dramatic flowers, no makeup, and hair in its natural state. I wanted to show intimacy in this styled elopement, meshing several ideas together- boho, natural, dark, moody, and magical.”
The venue…
“The venue was the perfect place for it. With all the crystals, unique furniture, and dark areas, it brings in whimsy and some moodiness.”
Bridal attire…
“I am obsessed with the bride’s look. Between the vintage vibes from the bell sleeves on the dress to the subtle addition of contrast with the baby’s breath in the bride’s hair, everything was carefully and Intentionally chosen for this shoot.”
