Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. We first met at a destination wedding in Antigua in 2009. Kevin’s cousin was marrying my best friend. He was the best man and I was the maid of honor.
For the proposal, Kevin flew to Antigua from Tobago to spend Christmas with our 4yr old son and the rest of my family. We were talking about marriage for a while so I knew it was gonna happen sooner or later. So on Christmas morning after our son finished opening his gifts he brought me a small ring box and said it’s for you, daddy said open it. When I opened it, instead of the ring I was anticipating, it was a pair of beautiful hibiscus earrings. I was a little disappointed but I did love the earrings. Then Kevin handed me another small jewelry box with a big smile on his face. When I opened the second box my heart dropped inside, it was a pair of tear drop earrings – no ring. So the rest of the day went well, had a great day with my family, and after dinner we were going on a boat ride with some of my cousins. As we were getting dressed to go, Kevin suggested I wear one of my new earrings. I asked him to grab one of them from off the dresser. He brought one of the boxes to me and when I opened it – it was an engagement ring!
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Being that both of our families are from the Caribbean we incorporated that culture in the food we had, consisting of traditional sweets and an amazing black cake.
Wedding Style: Modern Tropical
Wedding Dress: Light gold sweetheart fit and flare gown with an ivory lace overlay.
Bridesmaid/ grooms gifts: personalized robes and mugs.
Favorite item on the menu: coconut and callaloo soup.
First dance song: We had a medley of Maxwell’s “Lake by the Ocean” and Machel Montano’s “Fast Wine.”
What is your best memory from your wedding? One of the best memories from the wedding was when an award winning local Soca artiste, Otis, gave us a impromptus performance during our reception.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Remember it’s your day! Not you mother’s, friends’ or any other family members’, do what makes you happy!
