High School sweethearts, Andrea & Megan, met on the first day of Megan’s freshman year. Immediately drawn to Megan, Andrea quickly and cutely made the first move by openly stating, “You! You’re my freshman!” From that moment on they were friends, and Megan recalls how the best part of their school days became their shared time between classes. Over the years their friendship grew and feelings deepened into love – making them inseparable ever since.

Tell us how you met. Megan: “I met Andrea on an awkward first day of my Freshmen year of high school. I was headed to JROTC class with a girl who I became fast friends with, Shannon. The minute we walked through the doors and found our seats, Andrea goes ‘You! You’re my Freshman.’ I just smiled like what is she talking about…’her Freshman?’ I was an extremely shy and nervous 14 year old. She was a well-seasoned Sophomore. We had no idea we changed the course of our lives. We became friends, and my favorite time of day became talking between classes. Fast forward to a few Drill Team Practices and Competitions: Something was different. She didn’t talk to me directly, she only spoke about me to other people. I walked through the school to leave Drill Team Practice, but she runs up to me and throws an arm around my shoulder. ‘Perry! I was wondering if you would go out with me.’ I smiled. ‘I thought you might say something like that.’ The day after, we held hands at school for the first time; she’s had my heart ever since”
Andrea: “We met on Megan’s first day of high school at Harlem High. As soon as she walked in the room I was drawn to her. I called out to her that she was now my freshman and we’ve been friends ever since. JROTC brought us together and drill team practice is where we fell in love. We’ve hit a few bumps on the way but we always come back to each other. Who would have thought ‘my freshman’ would one day be my wife?”
Describe your wedding attire. The dress was a ballgown, champagne/off white in color, and it had gorgeous beading on the bodice and a sweetheart neckline. It had a very long train on the skirt, which was embroidered and beaded. I also had a sequined layer under the skirt to give it a subtle hint of sparkle and bling.
The suit was a beautiful, custom three piece. The color was grey, and the vest had a dash of purple on the back. My shoes were these amazing pink and creme Oxford that really tied the whole look together. I also wore a work bow tie and lapel pin.
What was the wedding shopping experience like for you? Thankfully, we hired Emoré Campbell as our wedding planner. That took a lot of the pressure of “wedding shopping” off of us. Megan was deployed throughout most of the process, so having a wedding planner made all of our shopping tasks simple and fairly easy.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Yes! We incorporated Philippine wedding culture and tradition into our ceremony, which really gave it more of a personal feel as opposed to having a more “generic” ceremony. We exchanged gold coins, lit our unity candles alongside our family members, and we jumped the broom as we walked down the aisle for the first time as Mrs. and Mrs. Perry.
Wedding Party Gifts: Andrea made her wedding party wooden boxes that she hand painted and filled with photos, bath bombs, rings, and a card. I gave my wedding party custom made cufflinks, socks and ties for the wedding. The cufflinks said things like “father of the bride” and “brother of the bride” on them. I like those cute little personal touches.
Gifts for each other: The wedding was our gift to each other! Haha, just kidding. We agreed not to do a gift exchange – mostly because we were financially tapped out at that point. But me being the person I am, I had a handkerchief made in secret overseas before I came home, with the words, “I’m waiting, Mrs. Perry” and a little heart on it. I had Andrea’s matron of honor give it to her right before she began to walk towards the ceremony area. I’m told it was a huge hit.
What is your best memory from your wedding? My best memory from the wedding is listening to Andrea say her vows while overcome with emotion. It was so beautiful.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? The best wedding advice I would give to engaged couples is not to sweat the small stuff. I had two firm necessities for the wedding; that was the string quartet and our signature cocktails. Everything else, I let Andrea’s fashionable eye dictate. The small details are important; they just aren’t important enough to fight over.
