Anequa and Rupert first connected on a popular dating app, where they swiped right into each others hearts. In Rupert’s words, what he found in Anequa “far exceeded what I could have hoped for, and I knew I had to commit to her.” That symbol of commitment came in the form of a proposal in New York City, at a park in which a most memorable date took place early in their relationship. Solidifying, in their minds, that they had truly discovered their soul mate…

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. We met through a popular dating app. We both swiped right, and from there on it was golden. Rupert proposed at the Highline in NYC, it is an elevated park that was an old subway line. Our fourth date was at the park, and on that date we spent four hours, because we had so much to talk about. He took me there to recreate our date and then at the end he proposed. It was a total surprise and of course, I said YES!
How did you know they were “the one”? Bride: “He met every single criterion I wanted in my future husband, he’s the man I prayed for. Rupert is a man of character, someone who loves and accepts me for all that I am and he constantly makes me laugh. We click, I knew without a doubt he was the One shortly after we started dating.”
Groom: “I had a very clear vision of what I wanted and needed in a partner and I set out to find what I had in my mind. What I found far exceeded what I could have hoped for and I knew I had to commit to her. There wasn’t a singular moment or activity, but over a rather short period of time it became ‘common knowledge’ to me that she was/is the one I needed by my side.”
Describe your wedding attire. We opted for black, gold and ivory as our wedding colors and went for an elegant, sophisticated and romantic theme.
What was wedding shopping like for you? I found my wedding dress the weekend I went dress shopping. Both my sister and my best friend flew into NYC from Florida, Rupert’s mom and sister also came. My sister face-timed my mother who lives in England. Everyone agreed it was the perfect dress. I felt incredibly loved and supported.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? Yes, we both share Caribbean heritage and chose Caribbean Rum Cake as our wedding favors.
Wedding Party Gifts: Rupert got his groomsmen Movado watches and I got my bridesmaids Kate spade bracelets and monogrammed bathrobes.
Favorite Item on the Menu: The prime rib
First Dance Song: “Don’t Change” by Musiq Soulchild
What is your best memory from your wedding? Groom: “Being at the altar.” Bride: “Walking down the aisle to meet Rupert. I will never forget that moment.”
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Bride: “Prepare for marriage, before you’re even married. Signing up for pre-marital counseling was one of the best things we did for our relationship and marriage.”
Groom: “Do marriage counseling and have very in-depth discussions on perceived roles and responsibilities and expectations for the marriage. Accept the fact that you are starting a new journey and do your best to learn about each other, not the version that you want, but the real version that exists.”
