Imagine you plan a first date, destination check, time check, variables check, and than boom your plans fall apart. For Curtis and Ashley this was the beginning of their life together, but thankfully, Curtis being the southern gentleman recovered quite well. Laughter over ice cream, banter over billiards, and a romantic stroll along the lakeside ended with hours of in-depth conversation sparking a synergy between them that has not singed since that night in Charlotte 2007. Whether laughing at a beloved brunch event or exploring on a Saturday morning, their bond is ironclad setting a beautiful foundation for the future. The romance of this classically themed engagement session was captured beautifully by Reem Photography.

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal: We met at a First Friday event in Charlotte, NC in 2007. We were both there with friends that recently relocated to the area. I noticed Curtis because he happened to be standing in the middle of the dance floor but he was on his cell phone the whole time. He claims he was checking work emails. I must have been feeling extremely bold that night because I walked right up to him and said, “Excuse me, you’re taking up space on the dance floor!” He smiled and asked me for a dance. The rest is history.
Curtis proposed on January 29, 2017. Curtis arranged for a small family brunch at one of my favorite brunch spots – The Front Porch Cafe on Miami Beach. It’s not abnormal for us to do an impromptu brunch because anyone that knows us knows that we love a good brunch! I was expecting my parents and sisters to be there. However, when I arrived I noticed that my childhood best friend was there along with my godchildren and her husband. I still did not think much of it because she mentioned that she would be in town for a party that weekend. On our way out, my dad suggested that we take a group photo and Curtis offered to take it. As we were all posing, it appeared that Curtis was having difficulty with the camera so he asked me to come over to help. I walked over to figure out what the problem was. He then looked at me and said, “You know, I’ve been meaning to ask you something.” Suddenly he was down on one knee! I stood there in in complete shock. He asked me to marry him, and of course, I SAID YES!
Describe your engagement session. It was important to us to have a classic look that captured our personalities and style. I like to describe Curtis’ style as Southern Gentleman and my style is very dainty and super feminine. I think our session engagement session captures that perfectly.
What did you do on your first date? Our first date did not go exactly as planned but it was by far one of the best first dates I ever had. Curtis planned for us to go to the movies but when we arrived at the theatre the movie was not playing at the theater at all. Completely embarrassed, he improvised. Instead, we ended up eating ice cream, playing pool and taking a romantic stroll along a lake that was in the area. We talked for hours and really got to know one another.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple? Our favorite thing to do as a couple is to go on “day dates”. We like to spend Saturdays doing random activities around the city. This could be trying out a new restaurant in the area, going to the movies or attending a local festival or event. Basically, anything that gets us out of the house and allows us to spend time with one another while experiencing new things together.
How has wedding planning been so far? Wedding planning has been great! I’ve managed not to become a bridezilla and it’s been exciting to see how everything is coming together.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day. We’re looking forward to celebrating with our family and close friends. We have had a ton of people who have supported us since the very beginning and having them there to witness this special moment means the world to us.
