Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Though they’d met almost a decade earlier through mutual friends, Ryan reconnected with Asia when she visited Boston on a Girl’s Trip. Despite successfully navigating a long distance relationship between Boston and DC for almost a year, Asia wasn’t expecting a proposal just yet. However, her “alarm” went off when Ryan mentioned he wanted to plan a visit to the Ferris Wheel at the National Harbor the next time he was in town. Since this was the same place they’d had their first date, Asia’s flags went up and she told her sister, Ariel, about her suspicions. Ariel, who’d spent weeks helping select an engagement ring quickly texted Ryan to “abort mission!” Instead, on the first day of summer Ryan regrouped and coordinated a sunset proposal at a nearby lake. Ariel secretly picked Ryan up from the airport though social media posts leading Asia to believe he was still at home in Boston. As Asia headed to what she thought was a dinner out with friends, they detoured to the park. She was told they needed her event planner’s opinion of the gazebo as a potential party venue. As they approached the candlelit gazebo Asia initially announced she’d thought they’d walked in on a seance! Once she realized what was actually happening, she burst into tears. Ryan appeared, dropping to one knee with a blue Tiffany & Co. ring box.
Describe your wedding attire. The wedding style was city chic. For his tuxedo, Ryan wanted something beyond the traditional cookie-cutter black tux. Initially he had his heart set on a navy blue shawl lapel tuxedo. But once he started the search, a midnight pin dot dinner jacket fit the bill.
Asia also wanted something different. After a few failed visits to bridal salons she knew something bespoke was the only way to go. Inspired by an Armani Prive gown she’d spotted at the Oscars several years before, she solicited the help of, not one, but two, bridal ateliers to create her ceremony and reception gowns.
For the bridal party, they wanted everyone to feel comfortable. The groomsmen wore black suits and the bridesmaids wore custom black gowns selected to match their personalities.
Bridesmaids and Groomsmen gifts: The bridesmaids received individual gifts that matched their personalities—from purses to embossed passport books and other personalized trinkets. The groomsmen received sterling silver flasks engraved with their initials.
Ceremony entrance song: “Nice For What” by Drake
First dance song: “Get You” by Daniel Caesar
What is your best memory from your wedding? Asia: “Walking down the aisle towards Ryan. Though we’d had a First Look and I had seen him earlier in the day, he teared up as I walked towards him! He had promised he wouldn’t but I think the emotion of the moment caught him off guard.”
Ryan: “The moment she walked down the aisle. Also, the electric violinist was a surprise from Asia and I loved it!”
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Honestly, the day is such a blur and goes by so quickly! Take some time for yourselves to be alone. Even if it’s just 5 minutes. And be sure to hire day-of-coordinators you can trust, peace of mind is priceless!
