Jamilla and Sequena have saved the date for a New Year’s Day 2016 wedding, making holidays and special days a focal point for memories. The two met at work and had their first date on none other than Valentine’s Day. Just a few years later, the beautiful couple became engaged at Sequena’s 30th birthday! Talk about a birthday to remember! Jamilla and Sequena took to Castleberry Hill, the same area where their wedding will be held, for their down to earth engagement session.
Tell us about how you met and all about the proposal!
Sequena and I met while I was training for a new job. We were supposed to be completing a job shadow, but she ended up piquing my interest in more than just the position. After that initial meeting, we kept in touch and went on our first date a couple of months later. Two and a half years later, during Sequena’s surprise 30th birthday celebration, she called me up to the front of the room and got down on one knee to propose in front of all of our friends! Although we had discussed a ring and her proposing, I never imagined she would pop the question during her own birthday!
The engagement session…
The inspiration for the photo shoot we left up to our friend and photographer, Jason. It was important to him and us as well to depict our normal life and interactions. Our main goal of sharing our journey to the aisle is to show the normalcy of same sex relationships. We are having the ceremony and reception in the historic Castleberry Hill and Jason chose the perfect locations in that area to shoot.
What did you do on your first date?
Our first date was on Valentine’s Day after getting to know each other for a couple of months. We both bought each other gifts, but I was not prepared for the new shoes Sequena would give me to wear that night. This should have been my first clue that she was addicted to shoes! We went to a steakhouse and ended the night listening to music in the car.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Sequena and I love going to the movies. I go for the experience and I believe she enjoys the popcorn and raisinets!
How has wedding planning been so far?
Wedding planning has been intense but extremely satisfying. The year we have been engaged has gone by so quickly, but to look up and start seeing the fruit of our labor is amazing. Being less than one hundred days away, I am able to really picture how all the vendors are going to come together. Although we can both be bridezillas, Sequena is very particular about the feel of the wedding and I am into details of the décor and budget, so we balance each other out. With the help of friends to coordinate and decorate, the wedding planning has been fun. We are quick to gather our bridal party for paper flower parties and invitation DIYs.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day.
I am looking forward to the ‘I Dos’! It is so easy to get caught up in the hair, the makeup, the veil and let’s not forget that dress and those receipts! While it is so much fun planning one of the most important days of our lives, I am mindful to remember why we are getting married. I have the most fun with my fiancé and I look forward to the moment I can call her my wife!
