Melissa and David’s love story began in 2011 when both were working for the same company.
With Melissa’s co-worker eager to set her up on a date, Melissa began listing all the qualities she looks for in a partner – and right at that moment, David walked by. “I like that, all of that,” Melissa remarked at the sight of him. From that day on Melissa’s friend took it upon herself to do a little detective work, befriending David to learn more about him to ensure he would be exactly right for Melissa. Once satisfied with her research she set Melissa and David up on their first date and they have remained inseparable ever since. How did you meet? David and I met in 2011 we were both working for US Airways Express in Charlotte. A co-worker was eager to set me up with someone and inquired about the type of man I was attracted to. As I was listing my preferred traits David walked by and I turned to her and said “I like that, all of that”. My friend said okay, and she took the next three months befriending David reporting back her findings and providing me with insights about him. David was initially curious as to why a married woman had befriended him and asked lots of personal questions. Once she was satisfied with her findings she shared with David that she had a friend that she would like to introduce him to, we were formally introduced in December 2011.
Tell us about the proposal. It wasn’t easy at all to pull off since surprising a person who is a planner means it’ll have to be a secret. I knew I wanted to propose on New Year’s Eve so while purchasing the ring, I asked the sales associates where would be an ideal place to propose. We are both new to Arizona so I needed as much feedback as possible. I wasn’t satisfied with any of their suggestions. While looking for New Year’s Eve events I stumbled across The Phoenix Symphony’s event page and noticed they were having a musical themed event that night. Perfect. because Melissa loves musicals. Not only did I have to keep the ring purchase a secret I also kept the night’s plans a secret as well. Melissa was just told to dress for a night out on the town. The announcement of the line up for the night brought such a smile on her face that I knew this was a great plan. Now how to pull off the proposal? At intermission, I stepped away to inquire about the best place in the building to propose, plus to get a program for the night’s events (my true excuse for leaving). I was told by one of the ushers that now at intermission would be perfect. I said cool, you’re my photographer. Let’s do it! I returned to our seats to find Melissa engaged in conversation with the person seated next to her. I went straight into my role and got down on one knee. Confused as to why I was kneeling Melissa instructed me to get up from the floor. I took the ring box from my pocket and started my speech. I told her that I would like for us to end the boyfriend-girlfriend stage and start the new year engaged. I told her that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her and would love for her to accompany me on this journey as my wife. So on that note will you marry me. The “yes” came with tear-filled eyes, a huge smile, and a great big hug, kiss and another huge smile. Meanwhile my photographer, the usher was in the aisle in front capturing this memorable moment for us.
What was the wedding shopping experience like for you? Our wedding style was formal. I selected an Ivory Maggie Sottero gown and David’s suit was custom made. My wedding shopping experience was amazing. I was initially anxious because I visited my first bridal store alone, all of my bridal party and family reside on the east coast and David and I are the only two out west. After sharing my anxiety with the bridal shop owner, both the consultant, whose name is also Melissa and the owner’s husband Denis “Mr. Avancy” told me they would stand in the gap for my bridal party and that they did. After finding the dress I loved I planned a “say yes to the dress” experience in my hometown where my family and bridal party could officially help me say yes to my dress. We had a wonderful time!
Wedding Party Gifts: Bridesmaids were gifted tank tops for the bridal shower, “get ready” rompers, beach bags with their initials, and “Boy Trouble” lip gloss by the Lipbar to complement their dresses. The groomsmen received Johnston and Murphy loafers and ties to wear for the ceremony.
Ceremony Entrance Song: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack
First Dance Song: “I Feel Good” by Beres Hammond
What is your best memory from your wedding? David’s best memory is the anticipation and excitement of our first look. My best memory is our first dance, although we were surrounded by people it felt like it was just the two of us dancing at home in our living room.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Always prioritize you and your partner, this is your special moment. Regardless of what else is going on and the input people have to give – this is all about the two of you.
