Dare to add one bold lipstick color to your makeup bag this Summer. Bright pinks/fuchsia, flaming oranges, deep burgundy and sexy reds are just a few bold shades that are in high demand. The majority of the crimson shades I’ve spotted this season are classic, yet fresh and adds a pop of color that brightens a face effortlessly (especially on “blah” days).
The Perfect Lip Shades:
- Light Skin: Pale Pinks, Peach, Red, Purples
- Medium: Bold Red, Bronze, Deep Browns, Magenta
- Dark Skin: Deep Red, Fuchsia
An easy trick to determining your skin’s undertone is to look at the color of your veins on the inside part of your wrists in natural sunlight. If they appear olive/green, you have a warm undertone; if they appear blue, you have a cooler undertone; if they look like a mixture of both, you may have a neutral undertone, which means most shades of lipsticks will be flattering on you, advises Moani Lee, color expert and Hourglass Global Brand Ambassador.
“To discover the perfect shade, try swiping a few options on the inside, fleshy part of your fingertips,” suggests Lee. “The natural pigment of your fingertips mirrors the pigment in your lips and the ‘right’ shade will stand out immediately.” (Quoted)

Be willing to experiment: Not sure what color works or where to begin? Find inspiration on Pinterest, fashion magazines, beauty blogs or plan a girl’s day out at a cosmetic counter at your local department store. I prefer matte shades of reds and pinks vs. glossy or shimmer lipsticks. As a bonus, I schedule mini makeovers quarterly to try new playful shades and I absolutely love mixing lip colors to create custom looks you can’t purchase. For example, MAC Cosmetics’ Ruby Woo and Diva creates such a sophisticated deep red lip for the office or for play.
Bold Lippy Tip: Wearing red lips? Line lips with a flattering and complementing liner (never too dark), keep eyes (don’t forget your mascara) and blush neutral to draw attention to your lips. Let them be your statement and remember less is always more.
Be mindful of the occasion: Excessive lip gloss or bright shades may be a bit much for the office, however, an evening affair or the weekend would be perfect to rock stand out in the crowd lips.
