Tell Us About How You Met!
“Jonas and I met in 2003 at Virginia Union University where we both attended for undergrad. We had an Art History class together. We had a mutual friend in the class who would always ask me for candy. He knew I always had some in my purse! Jonas used that as a way to talk to me in the beginning. Then later into the class we had an assignment that required us to use the textbook. Jonas did not purchase the book so he asked me if he could borrow my book when I was done. Come to find out he wrote his number in the inside cover of my book! I actually called him once I was done with the assignment so he could borrow it. We eventually got to know one another and it was it was great!” Both Tanikka and Jonas supported each other throughout the remainder of their college years up until graduation and well into their careers. Tanikka and Jonas are also members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Omega Psi Phi, respectively. They officially became a couple in 2005 and the rest is history!
All About the Proposal!
“Our engagement took place at The Chop House Restaurant in Washington, DC. It was a total surprise to me because he proposed on HIS birthday November 21, 2013! It all started about 2 months prior to the engagement. During a casual conversation with Jonas’ sister-in-law, she asked me if I was planning on doing anything special for Jonas’ birthday. The more and more I thought about it I decided it would be nice to surprise him with a birthday dinner so I started putting my plan in to action!”
“I set up the reservations and secretly orchestrated this surprise dinner while telling Jonas that we would go to a quiet dinner together for his birthday. The day of the engagement, Jonas came home from work and was very nonchalant about his birthday even going as far as saying he didn’t want to go to dinner, he just wanted to relax. I tried to keep my cool without him knowing I was freaking out inside thinking about all the people we had waiting for us at the restaurant.
Eventually we get to the restaurant, the hostess has the biggest smile on her face when we arrive so I’m thinking to myself “Wow she must be as excited as I am about this surprise dinner!” We see all of our family and friends, people are recording and taking pictures. I turn around and say “Surprise!” I was so proud of myself for being able to surprise him.
He fakes like he is surprised then turns to everyone at the table to give a speech. He states, “I know this day is supposed to be about me but I really wanted to take this day to ask Tanikka if she would marry me.” He gets down on one knee, pulls out the ring and all of our guests and along with the whole restaurant starts clapping. I was in total shock and I couldn’t stop crying tears of joy! It was the best surprise I had ever had!
After the engagement everyone filled me in that Jonas had this whole thing planned months in advance!”
Wedding Style
“My wedding dress was perfect for me! It was a Mori Lee fit-and-flare beaded dress with a sweetheart neckline. It was ivory with a gold undertone. I was never the girl that already planned out her wedding since the day she was 9 years old. I had no idea what I wanted or was looking for in a dress. I was opened to trying on a variety of styles. I looked at a few wedding books and wedding shows on TLC and decided that I wanted a fitted dress for my wedding day.”
“What I envisioned for my wedding day was a sweet romantic feel to the day. I wanted to look sexy for my groom yet with a romantic and elegant flare. I loved my wedding dress because it made me feel more glamorous and like I was wearing a special dress for the most special day. The people who were there when I picked my dress were my mother, maid of honor, one bridesmaid and my now sister in law. The wedding consultants at Global Bridal Gallery made my wedding dress experience so amazing!”
Culture
“My husband is West Indian and I am from Washington D.C. but my mom is from southern Virginia. We incorporated a little bit of southern charm with island flare. We had Soca music at the reception and our wedding favors which doubled as seating cards were mini bottles of pink Moscato for a little southern charm. The reception was genuine party atmosphere like in true West Indian style!”
Memories
“It’s hard for me to pick my best moment from our wedding because there were so many memorable moments that I loved. I loved that my husband surprised me and at the end of our ceremony he pulled out his cellphone and he wanted to take our 1st official selfie as husband and wife. My dad’s speech was amazing so that was also a great memory. But most of all it was the party atmosphere and place just filled with love which is what we ultimately wanted.”
Help a bride-to-be out!
“The best advice I could give would be to allow yourself to be super relaxed on the day of your wedding. Nothing else matters about that day other than meeting your husband to be at the alter.”
