Just because it isn’t love at first sight, doesn’t mean everlasting love can’t be the outcome.
The first time Robyn laid eyes on Amir was during freshman orientation at Elizabeth State University. Robyn was registering for classes for the upcoming semester when she spied a then, random guy sporting a Bluetooth headset. “I remember thinking, ‘what a cornball!’ Little did I know what God had in store for us” shares Robyn.
Months later, the two formally met while participating in a summer internship program. On the first night, the program held a movie night as a way for the students to break the ice and interact. “I was sitting in the back of the room, when this guy (Amir) walked up to me. And I remember thinking he had a nice smile and he was cute, but we didn’t say anything to each other” says Robyn. After a while, Amir attempted to make conversation with Robyn, but she just wasn’t into it! “There eventually came a point where he asked me for my pillow. And I just gave it to him and didn’t say thing” shares Robyn.
Eventually, Amir charmed his way into Robyn’s heart during a game of volleyball. The two were teammates and in between serves, he kept cracking jokes as a way to keep Robyn laughing. “We continued to get to know each other throughout the summer, and the rest is history” shares Robyn.

The Proposal:
Amir: “It was while living in D.C. I realized that I didn’t want to live life without Robyn. She had moved to Indiana for grad-school, while I was working in the Capital. It was during the summer after her graduation that I decided to take a trip to see her parents to ask for their blessing to marry their daughter. They were shocked, but excited. I didn’t have the ring yet, but was in the process of saving to get her something nice.
By that following December, we had moved to Charlotte and were still getting settled into our new apartment when I took a trip to Jared, the Galleria of Jewelry! They gave me a whole tutorial on rings, diamonds—cuts, clarity, etc. I found two rings I really liked, so I got our families and her best friend’s opinion of both rings. We all were in agreement on the ring I selected—a cushion cut, halo diamond.
The night I proposed, was an interesting one. It was Christmas Eve and I had just got off work. Robyn was getting ready to go to her family’s annual Christmas Eve party at her cousin’s house. I don’t know exactly how we got on the subject, but we started arguing about the kids we did not have yet. When she got ready to leave, I told her I wasn’t up to it. But after she left, I realized that this would be the perfect opportunity to pop the question.
My family was together in Philadelphia, so I called them to let them know what was going on. All they said was “Finally!” I then called her sister to tell her. She helped me get in touch with her Aunt and we came up with a plan for me to come in while Robyn was surrounded by everyone “taking a family picture.” When the time came, I walked in the house with roses in one hand and a box in the other. I remember her look of confusion and then shock when I dropped to one knee. I professed my love for her, showed her the ring, and asked her if she would do me the honor of being my wife. And the rest is history!”
Describe your engagement session! Did you have a theme?
Our engagement session was very relaxed. We didn’t have a theme, but we had some key components that we knew we wanted include—our dog Shadow, the denim outfits we wore, etc. Amir kept fighting me on the denim outfits, but end the end those were some of his favorite pictures!
What did you do on your first date?
Our first date was on a Friday night to a local fair near Elizabeth City. We ended up going with a group of friends, but split off on our own for some of the rides. Amir was determined to win me something lol. I remember him trying to knock down some pins with a baseball, but he kept over throwing the ball—our friends have this on tape somewhere. Before the end of the night, he ended up winning me a stuffed bear.
What’s your favorite thing to do as a couple?
We enjoy getting out the house! Amir is a big movie buff so we practically live at our local AMC theatre. We also enjoy going to the museums, parks, and aquariums.
On the days we stay in, we have game night. We have everything from Taboo to Rockem Sockem Robots! Give us a good game, some pizza, and a movie and we’re good to go!
How has wedding planning been so far?
Wedding planning has been an adventure. We have a very clear vision for our wedding day and lucky we have been able to find the right team to bring that vision to life! I think my favorite part of the process has been picking out the décor! I am big on details, so this was fun! The tastings have been fun as well.
Tell us what you’re looking forward to most on the wedding day!
The moment I am looking forward to the most is walking down the aisle and seeing Amir. I know its going to be very emotional for the both of us. I’m also looking forward to the reception—good food, music, and just celebrating with our friends and family!
