The fashion set recently made their pilgrimage to Christie’s Auction House in New York to view The Collection of Andre Leon Talley, which has raised over $3 million.
The late Andre Leon Talley’s exhibition was held during Fashion Week at Rockefeller Center. The sale of his most precious valuables followed at Christie’s Auction house in New York on February 15, 2023.
Andre Leon Talley was more than a fashion icon.
He was a symbol of Blackness in an industry where people of color still feel the effects of rejection. The fashion world itself is at times an impenetrable fortress; shaken to its core within the last few years. The in-person exhibition held at Rockefeller Center displayed many of the personal treasures of Talley who created a lifestyle fit for the erudite Duke of Fashion.
An auction for the greater good
The final proceeds of the auction will benefit his beloved Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham that Talley attended as a boy in North Carolina and Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York.
The fact that two churches will receive the proceeds of his legacy speaks to the man himself, who never forgot the most special place of all: his church. For many African Americans, the church is also their sanctuary, their home. Thus, his lasting memory will be one of fashion, faith, and fellowship. He will be eternally missed in the fashion world and beyond.
