Amanda and Martins’ love story began while attending a professional organization gathering in Nigeria. Almost as if guided by the hand of a higher power, there was a connection between them that only continued to grow from that moment on. The shared strength of faith in God, and overall concern for each other’s well-being is what eventually led them to believe they had found “the one.”

Tell us how you met and all about the proposal. Amanda: “We met through a group organization called Black Nurses and after talking for some months we decided to finally meet in Nigeria. For the proposal, he took me to the zoo in Nigeria and proposed, which I wasn’t expecting it at all. I had to take a trip to Dubai soon, so he kept telling me he was going to propose in Dubai.”
Martins: “My Brother and his wife were there and we all stopped to take a break. We were sitting down and she got up, so I brought the ring out of my pocket and knelt down partially and asked her ‘Will you marry me’ and she said yes.”
How did you know they were “the one”? Amanda: “I hadn’t had great relationships in the past, but when we were speaking on the phone we ended up really connecting and he asked to pray with me. It was also him being concerned about my well being and not just himself.”
Martins: “I just knew she was the kind of woman I wanted to be with, she was kind, beautiful, and she prayed. I liked her plain beauty.”
What was wedding shopping like for you? I had difficulty searching for dresses. Number one because of my height and also because I wanted something modest. I didn’t want too much lace or any tulle, so I thought to have more of a classic look I would go with satin. I also wanted something that would stand out. I was looking for a couture style with a frill that would catch people’s eyes.
Did you incorporate any culture into your wedding? We did include culture through the music and food. We wanted to have African and Caribbean calypso music and have it reflect our journey of him being from Nigeria and my Indian and African descent. We also did the money dance of people spraying the money around us. We also made sure that our food reflected our culture and brought in roti and jollof rice and our cake had a map of the world to show bringing everyone together.
Wedding Party gifts: Bottle opener in the form of the word “Love.” Bridesmaids received candles and lotion
Favorite item on the menu: Roti and Jollof rice
First dance song: “All Over” by Tiwa Savage
What is your best memory from your wedding? Seeing all our friends and family being there to support us.
What is the best wedding advice you can give to engaged couples? Make your wedding personal. If there’s something special to you go out and do it, don’t get caught up in tradition.
