Our story is unique, yet it has a dream-filled ending! It started back in spring of 2007. Jay & I met via Facebook through a mutual friend but only as friends. I lived in NC and he lived in NY. By spring 2010, we were both single and building our own lives. I was headed to DC to get my Masters at George Washington University; Jay was set to move overseas to play pro basketball. However, we started to date in the summer of 2010. Jay traveled on the “Chinatown bus” from NY to DC to see me every weekend for 6 months. It was closer, convenient, and cheap! Our first date was at the National Harbor in DC. We walked down the pier and enjoyed each other even more than over the phone! The fairytale lands in on May 23, 2011. Jay picked me up from work, took me to eat at Chipotle and reminded me of the suggestion I made days earlier to walk the harbor. I decided, “sure, why not, but I need to change into some comfortable clothes first.” Jay took me home and I literally put on the most comfortable thing I could find in my closet: an old cheerleading t-shirt, leggings, and slide-in flip flops! Headed to the harbor, I drove and decided to take a new route there so I had my GPS on. My best friend, Zena, texted me that she was in town for the week. I gave Jay my phone to text her back and still tell me which direction we were going from the GPS. Little to my knowledge, he took her number out of my phone to text her secretly from his phone (they still hadn’t met) to inform her of the plan. He suggested she come to the harbor so they could finally meet. We got to the harbor, did our usual “walk around” “get ice cream”, etc etc. Randomly, Zena texts me and says, “I’m on my way to the harbor.” I’m thinking, “That was fast.” Zena arrives and we stood and talked for a minute. They were introduced…
Everything’s normal. Jay then says, “Let’s walk to the end of the pier.” I looked at him and said, “Nobody wants to go all the way down there with those bugs and its dark!” However, both him & Zena teamed up on me and forced me to walk down with them. As we walked down, Zena & I were in full conversation mode. We hadn’t seen each other in months. Nearing the end of the pier, Jay comes out of nowhere with this “corny talk.” “Bee, you know I love you and you mean more to me than the world.” And so on and so on. I looked at him like, “dude, yea I know but what are you talking about, this is random.” Little did I know, he was about to ask me for my hand in marriage. As he kept talking, Zena slowly moved away and started taking pictures, Jay got down on one knee and asked me to be his wife! HOW AWESOME AND FREAKING RANDOM WAS THAT?!?!?! I was in shock that I laughed and cried at the same time while saying, “Yes, of course!” It was the same day as our 4 year friendship anniversary and 10 month relationship anniversary. Perfect! I admit, me being the Queen of making plans and knowing everything, I was swept off my feet and surprised beyond measure!!! Still to this day, we do not know who the mutual friend is that helped in our connection. One thing we are sure of is, God makes NO mistakes and he puts people together for a reason, some for a season and others for a lifetime.
Such a sweet story! Congrats Brittney and Jeffrey. We wish you all the best.
