Historical Paphos
Cyprus is full of fascinating history and one of the best resorts on the island for experiencing this is Paphos. Some of the island’s top historical spots are here, so make sure you take the time to visit at least one of the top historical attractions when you visit.
Baths of Aphrodite
The island of Cyprus is of course legendary home to the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and the baths of Aphrodite are a must-see when you come to Paphos. Located near the fishing village of Latchi, the baths of Aphrodite are where the goddess is said to have taken her baths in the natural pool surrounded by fig trees here. The mythology goes that it was here she met her lover Adonis when he stopped to take a drink.
One of other the myths surrounding the baths is that if you take a dip in them they will give you fertility, but don’t go testing it out as people are not allowed in the pools nowadays!
Aphrodite’s Rock
This is another must-see associated with the legend of Aphrodite. Believed in mythology to be the goddess’s birthplace, the rocks of Aphrodite are where she emerged from the sea to begin her life as a mortal.
Seeing Aphrodite’s Rock alone would probably not be enough to fill a whole day so many day trips are available incorporating stopping off at Aphrodite’s Rock to take pictures and then moving on to view some of the island’s other famous sights.
Kato Paphos Archaeological Park
A listed world heritage site, Kato Paphos Archaeological Park has plenty to see, including ruins, rooms of fabulous mosaics and a pretty white lighthouse. Entrance to the park is €3.40 or you can incorporate it with seeing some of Cyprus’s other sites in a day trip.
Only three miles away is Eleni Holiday Village, which is the ideal place to stay if you’re looking for somewhere with easy access to some of the island’s key historical sites.
Paphos Castle
Attached to the Kato Paphos harbour by an arched bridge, Paphos Castle was once a Byzantine fort which was restored by the Ottoman Empire in later years. Another world heritage site, you can pay €1.70 go into the castle and up to the top of the tower to enjoy the fantastic views, or you can simply admire it from the outside.
Visiting hours are 8am-6pm in spring and autumn, 8am-5pm in winter and 8am-7.30pm in summer.
