On Monday, December 4th, 2023, we kicked off our 9th annual Coterie Retreat in the Cayman Islands with highlights including a pre-conference poolside mixer, esteemed panel speakers, lunchtime discussions, and an oceanfront welcome party!
MunaLuchi Brides’ annual Coterie Retreat is so much more than just another conference. It champions inclusion, diversity, and community. With every retreat, it is our mission to provide a platform of growth and collaboration for wedding professionals that caters to the fastest-growing multicultural market (and to have fun, of course!).
All year long, worldwide wedding professionals and wedding enthusiasts eagerly await MunaLuchi’s annual Coterie Retreat. Set in luxurious locales, the 3-day experience is not like your typical work conference.
With educational panels and inspiring speakers, relaxation, and ample opportunities to network (and party!) with colleagues, the yearly event has inspired endless collaborations and new connections.
With some folks attending every year since our very first Coterie Retreat back in 2014, the experience has become a kind of family reunion.
A 3-day gathering of familiar, friendly faces from different backgrounds, all coming together in solidarity to celebrate Black Love and Black-Owned Business. It is a family that will embrace you with open arms, wrap you with warmth and kindness, and ultimately help you grow.
This year, our 9th annual Coterie Retreat continued MunaLuchi’s ongoing legacy of love and family in the exquisite Cayman Islands. Co-founders Jackie and Chike Nwobu worked with Tiffany Chalk Events to bring all of the exciting details to life. And there were many surprises in store this year!
First, we invite you to experience our Pre-Conference Mixer at the Westin Grand Cayman along with day one of this year’s Coterie Retreat in the Cayman Islands.
Thank you to all of our fantastic partners who helped bring our first day of Coterie Retreat 2023 to life, including our welcome party host at Grand Old House and our decor and rental sponsor, Celebrations Weddings.
A special thanks to our photography team, Trene Forbes Photography and Charity Hope Photography, and videography team, Mike Okafor Films, who captured all the beautiful details of this year’s retreat.

Mix & Mingle…
Day 1 of General Sessions:
Shout out to Sandi Spells Design for creating our beautiful stationery for this year’s retreat!
Our wonderful Emcee, Karli Harvey Raymond, officially opened Coterie Retreat 2023!
MunaLuchi’s Founders Jackie and Chike Nwobu took the stage for opening remarks.
Since taking a leap of faith and officially launching MunaLuchi Bride Magazine back in 2010, the power couple has been inspiring and empowering Black Business Owners to pursue their dreams.
Deeply guided by their faith in God, the couple’s immense passion and dedication to uplifting others were felt in every word. It was a testament to the loving community they have fostered.
Keynote Speaker: Preston Bailey
Success in Life Happens When a Shift in Mindset Takes Place
Our esteemed keynote speaker, Preston Bailey, took the stage to give an inspirational talk about creating the right mindset for success.
Since opening his design studio in 1980, Preston has established himself as one of the top Event Designers in the world. In his illustrious 43-year-long career (and counting!) he is known for his incredible ability to transform ordinary spaces into lush, theatrical environments. Celebrities and top-notch clients from around the world (including royal families!) hire him to bring their dream events to life.
Bursting with color and ingenuity, his work has even transcended the wedding and event space to the art scene. His art installations are featured across the world in New York, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Taiwan, London… and more!
Attendees were beyond ecstatic to gain insight from the mastermind creative, Preston Bailey, himself.
“2023 has been an experience,” Preston began.
Following the “wedding boom” that was 2022, for folks in the wedding industry, 2023 has felt, well, different to say the least. Despite the change of pace, Preston said, “Fate keeps us going.”
An artist is someone who survives.
Preston Bailey
To get into a mindset for success, Preston encouraged the audience to ask themselves, “What’s your superpower?” and “What are you good at?”.
These two components are key to understanding yourself and your business needs. His own “superpowers” include design, unique, out-of-the-box ideas, and teaching.
Once you’ve identified your strengths, the next step is to understand your clients.
“My clients like me,” Preston shared. “I listen to them.”
He further explained how having frank discussions with his customers (particularly about his pricing and being clear about his offerings), is critical to clients understanding why his services cost what they do.
Preston also advised folks to think about the costs of design, planning, and production.
“These are all costs in your business,” he explained. With this in mind, he recommends designers implement hourly rates and fees to supplement those costs.
Once you’ve considered all of your business needs, a well-crafted proposal including high-quality images showcasing your work with costs/offerings listed is key to sealing the deal.
Ultimately, he concluded if people understand your services, and your offerings, and see the value of those services, they will be willing to spend.
Creativity is key!
While social media offers an endless pool of so-called ‘inspiration,’ according to Preston there is “no creativity on Instagram.” Everything is replicated. He encourages designers to create something new and different.
Preston offered a few examples of his unique concepts, including an elevated winter wedding reception he created without using a single flower and a sculpture made entirely with sunflowers!
In his creative process, which he refers to as a “labor of looking within,” he often creates storyboards and finds inspiration from the theater, art, and his dreams.
He recommends everyone plan a monthly “artist date” for themselves to explore things that fuel them creatively.
Develop a healthy ego.
– Preston Bailey
While Preston has accomplished so much in his career, he still acknowledges the value of humility and service.
At the beginning of his career, Preston admitted he didn’t make money for 10 years; however, he kept working, established an incredible portfolio, and ultimately persevered.
“Service comes from the heart,” he concluded.
And in everything he creates, you can truly feel love, ingenuity, and passion in every detail.
Marshawn Evans-Daniels
RICHER: Think Higher, Target Smarter
What if you’re not supposed to be an echo of what was poured into you, but a catalyst of what’s never been done before.”
Marshawn Evans-Daniels
Reinvention Strategist, Crypto Investor, Faith-Walker, and Business Coach, Marshawn Evans-Daniels, isn’t a stranger to MunaLuchi’s Coterie Retreat.
As a speaker at last year’s retreat in Jamaica, guests were overjoyed to welcome her back for another insightful dialogue, this time on thinking higher and targeting smarter.
Marshawn began her presentation (which she called a “talk-shop”) with prayer intentions.
She encouraged folks to hold hands and be fully present in the moment. It was a profound experience, feeling so connected to everyone in the room.
After embuing positivity and warmth upon the crowd, Marshawn began to reflect on an experience she had as a child while babysitting.
When Marshawn was 11 years old and people-watching out the window, a Caucasian woman stopped in front of her house. They caught eyes through the window. A few moments later, the woman knocked on the front door of their home and asked if Marshawn would be interested in babysitting her children.
Marshawn accepted the job offer. However, when it came time to be paid, the woman offered her a choice between $1 or $5. She ended up choosing the $1. The woman asked, “Are you sure?” and Marshawn nodded, “Yes.”
At that moment, Marshawn decided to settle for less. Yet, internally, she was struggling with what she thought she deserved. The concept between less and more.
“The less,” she explained, “Is the familiar, or the normal.”
She challenged the audience to ask themselves, “Why do we accept less when we deserve more? Why not dream bigger?”
Identity directly impacts our impact.
Marshawn Evans-Daniels
THIS SEEMINGLY SMALL ANECDOTE BECAME A MAJOR CATALYST IN HER LIFE.
On a larger scale, the story serves as a fueling point to help people recognize and ultimately combat their internal competing voices, which she identifies as “Little Me” vs. “Future Me.”
To challenge this internal dialogue, she created “The Purpose Map.” Guiding the audience, she helped them draw their own maps. Step by step, she drew 4 squares connected by a bridge. Each segment contemplated a question: “Who am I supposed to be? Who did I decide to be? What Gifts do I bring? And Where am I being led to lead next?”
In this map of life, Marshawn leaves space for disruption.
She recalled her first failed engagement and her sports agency, which she had built from the ground up and ultimately shut down for the sake of love, and the passing of her father. These moments were extremely difficult times in her life. Yet she found her way through her Faith.
Disruption is always about a new destination, it’s never about your destruction.
Marshawn Evans-Daniels
The “gap” is a critical time in one’s life. A time of change, deep reflection, and evolution.
Marshawn explained that some people are operating in their calling versus in information. The “gap” is where that critical shift happens, where an individual steps into their calling.
“I thought what I did was what I was,” she admitted. However, once she stepped into her true calling, she discovered who she was meant to be.
There are certain things that you have been that are not a part of who you are becoming.
Marshawn Evans-Daniels
Once a person is walking in their calling, the next step (in business) is figuring out how to authentically connect with your audience.
Drawing a new circle diagram, Marshawn dived into part 2 of her session: “Are you a circle of influence?”
In this circle of influence, there are 4 parts:
- “Who” = targeted audience; who do you rescue?
- “What” = current pain or active struggle your audience faces.
- “Where” = what’s their desired outcome; where do they desire to go?
- “How” = how will you get them there?
“Influence comes with understanding,” Marshawn stated. “If people feel like you know them, they will come to you. When people feel known for who they are… they have a level of trust.”
In business, trust is essential. And according to Marshawn, “Entrepreneurship is the new Faith movement.” She has recognized her biggest growth when it’s accompanied by spiritual development and operating in her real voice.
She concluded by asking the crowd to think about their “richer market,” and to ask themselves if they are building a ministry or an industry.
For Marshawn, this distinction is key.
If you’re living a RICH life (Really in Christ’s Hands) and walking in your calling, then clients will come. Revenue will come.
You just have to “Dare to think higher and believe bigger!”
Liene Stevens
Paid in Full: Drawing the Paycheck You Deserve
Your dreams are your dreams and those dreams are valid.
Liene Stevens
Liene Stevens, the Founder and CEO of Think Splendid, is an expert in the business of weddings.
Since founding her company in 2005, she has been helping business owners succeed with cost-effective business strategies and money management guidance. Her strategies are taught in 43 universities and trusted by clients in 97 countries!
As the global leader in wedding business consulting, Think Splendid’s clients include industry leaders, luxury brands, hotels, and tourism destinations that serve high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth couples and wedding guests.
Liene’s journey into the wedding industry and eventually starting her own company began while working at a non-profit organization.
At only 19 years old, she found herself promoted overnight, and shortly after, 4 members of her team were taken hostage overseas. With the help of her teammates, Liene was ultimately able to resolve this situation.
However, that experience made her realize she wanted to have boundaries in her career. She longed for a healthy work-life balance with less stress.
“So I picked weddings,” Liene shared, laughing.
Of course, the wedding industry has its unique problems.
Although Liene enjoyed owning an event company, she quickly realized she was more interested in the behavioral psychology behind the client’s experience.
This interest has continued to fuel her work today and has made her a go-to advisor on spending behaviors, particularly among Gen-Z.
Her wedding buying behavior model, WedType™, is the first program of its kind and is helping wedding and hospitality professionals around the world increase profitability, market share, and shareholder value.
At this year’s Coterie Retreat, Liene’s focus was on helping wedding professionals get paid the wage of their dreams.
To determine this, she prompted attendees to ask themselves, “What do you want for your life and your career?”
She then advised folks to make a goal of what their dream salary is and to imagine what their dream life looks like. Of course, everyone’s ideal life is going to look different and that’s okay.
“You do not have to want what others want,” she shared.
Within that “goal salary,” there are 3 numbers to consider:
- Personal Salary
- Operations Budget
- Total Revenue
According to Liene’s research, she breaks down well-paid wedding professionals’ total revenue into the following percentages:
- 30% owners pay
- 30% operations
- 30% taxes
- 05% emergency
- 05% bonus
Now, if you’re a wedding planner, to find the total number of weddings needed per year, she divides revenue by price point.
- Ex: $333,334 / $5,000 = 67 weddings needed per year
- Ex: $200,000/ $5,000 = 40 weddings needed per year
To determine your total revenue needed, divide your salary goal by 30%.
- Ex: $100,000 / 30% = $333,334 Total Revenue
Pro-tip: Remember to think about your emergency fund, or as Liene calls it: “If you stay ready, you don’t have to be ready fund.”
Liene wrapped up her informative presentation by reminding attendees of often-overlooked costs that they need to consider:
- Visa fees
- Project labor
- Venue restraints
- Taxes (FAM trips)
- Public speaking engagements (after 3 speaking engagements = taxed)
- Remote employees (taxed based on location)
Coterie Marketplace
Before breaking for lunch, attendees had the chance to chat with our marketplace vendors.

Meghan Ely
Are You Ready for the New Way of Doing Business in Weddings
OFD Consulting owner, Meghan Ely, combines in-the-trenches event experience with a love of public relations to empower her clients to take their businesses to new heights.
A long-time industry speaker and writer, she is a WeddingPro educator with The Knot + WeddingWire, as well as a regular contributor to a variety of industry publications.
Meghan represents clients globally and has earned them coverage with the New York Times, Martha Stewart Weddings, The Knot, Forbes, Good Morning America, and Brides.com, among other outlets.
She is the 2021 Wedding Industry Professionals Association (WIPA) President and a long-time member of NACE. A long-time educator, Meghan is also the founder of WeddingIndustrySpeakers.com.
Her team’s publicity efforts are regularly honored by the Public Relations Society of America. BizBash recently named her one of the top Clubhouse accounts to follow in the event industry.
At this year’s Coterie Retreat, she was talking all about the changing tides of business in weddings.
We cannot navigate these uneven waters without understanding what we’re getting into.
Meghan Ely
She noted several changes happening in the wedding industry that wedding professionals need to pay attention to. For one, how people are buying things is changing. Especially leading into the new year.
“People buy differently during an election year,” Meghan shared.
On top of that, today’s couples are changing. While many folks thought couples getting married were older on average, this is not the case. Although this can be geographically determinant, who is consuming luxury (weddings included!) is a lot younger than many expected.
Meghan shared that 80% of all luxury goods will be consumed by Millennials, GenZ, and Generation Alpha next year.
what makes these younger generations unique?
Meghan explained that these generations value small businesses and authenticity and they appreciate seamlessness and ease of use.
“They want to know they can depend on you and your business,” Meghan said.
Their shopping journey is their own.
Despite the current state of the economy, many young people are also spending more of their own money. Because of this, brand abandonment is real but different as younger consumers are not as loyal to specific brands as they once were. It’s therefore so important to create an authentic brand.
People believe your brand before they book you.
Meghan Ely
They want to know what you stand for.
According to Meghan, there are many overt and subtle ways to showcase what your brand stands for. She gave several easy-to-implement examples including asking for pronouns, using “couple” instead of “Mr. & Mrs.” on your website, or incorporating a frequently asked questions page.
Additionally, young folks want social proof.
They want to know what your offerings are and trust that you’ll deliver. To build trust, Meghan advises business owners to include updated testimonials, ‘featured on logos,’ and even include these in their social profiles and bios.
These minor changes can make a huge difference in a customer’s experience and they won’t take away from the aesthetic of your website either.
“Beauty can intersect with utility,” Meghan elaborated.
Meaningful engagement is necessary.
Younger generations are engaging with their favorite brands online. Therefore, “The right brands will meet prospects where they hang out online.”
With this in mind, Meghan added that you don’t have to be perfect anymore.
Apps like TikTok, BeReel, IG Reels, and YouTube Shorts are the way of the future and they allow for in-the-moment content generation. This ultimately cultivates more genuine engagement.
Wrapping up her presentation, Meghan left the audience with a few asks:
- Show off!
- Prioritize relevancy (couples want to see you as a guiding light).
- Leverage your personality – be authentically you!
- Commit to future-proofing: “Our best work is ahead of us, not behind us.”
Destination Wedding Panel
Travel Transformations Unlocked: Elevate Your Business Model through the Integration of Destination Weddings and Events in Your Portfolio
For this year’s destination wedding panel, we welcomed 5 of the top 10 Caribbean destinations to the stage!
Panelists included Director Rosa Harris of the Cayman Islands, Commissioner Joseph Boschulte of the US Virgin Islands, Tourism Marketing Officer Danielle Weekes of St. Kitts, Director of Romance Freda Malcolm of The Islands of the Bahamas, and Senior Sales Manager Richard Moss of St. Lucia.
The ever-entertaining and incredibly talented ‘OG’ Coterie Retreat attendee, Brian Green of Events By Brian Green LLC, was our destination panel moderator.
In his opening statements, Brian noted the immense impact that destination events have had on the wedding industry.
“Destination events are expected to grow to a $78 billion industry,” he shared. “And multi-day events mean charging for multiple-day events.”
For wedding planners in particular, it is so important to take part in this lucrative industry. Not only for the benefit of their own pockets but to support tourism in the Caribbean.
The Caribbean is the perfect place for weddings. And while each Caribbean destination has its unique traits, Brian noted one component that connects them all…
Across the Caribbean, there is love.
Brian Green
Danielle Weekes – ST. KITTS TOURISM
Tourism Marketing Officer, Danielle Weekes, of St. Kitts Tourism wasn’t shy to boast about the beauty and endless possibility of St. Kitts as a wedding destination.
“We have a reputation for fantastic views,” she shared proudly. “We provide an immersive experience, offering authenticity in everything we do.”
With their current Venture Deeper campaign, couples are encouraged to explore the varied cultures of St. Kitts and experience the island to the fullest.
Another tempting reason for couples to tie the knot in St. Kitts (or on its smaller partner island, Nevis) is the convenience. Danielle explained, “You don’t need to establish residency before saying I do here.”
Additionally, the island’s diverse landscape allows couples to get married in unique locations ranging from the beach to the rainforest!
Wedding vendors looking to plan nuptials on the island will be relieved to know that on-island romance providers are happy to assist with all planning and coordination needs.
Freda Malcolm – THE ISLANDS OF THE BAHAMAS
Director of Romance for The Islands of the Bahamas, Freda Malcolm, has over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry.
For the last 15 years, she has been serving the Islands of the Bahamas and has implemented countless new initiatives in the ways of romance and weddings.
Some of her biggest accomplishments include the re-establishment of The Bahamas Bridal Association (the only association of local wedding service providers endorsed by MOT), and developing The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism’s very own Honeymoon Registry, a Romance Blog, and content for social media.
With a population of less than 4,000 and 700 diverse islands, Freda talked about the Bahamas’ many unique traits. One key component is that it’s a year-round destination.
In 2023, the destination hosted 255,000 stop-over visitors and garnered $700 million in revenue! With so many islands available, couples can get married on one island and enjoy their honeymoon on another.
Freda also noted the importance of their website (www.Bahamas.com/weddings). The easy-to-navigate site is filled with quality information, facts, and guidance on how to bring your dream wedding to life.
The previously mentioned Bahamas Bridal Association (which Freda brought back to the island) is another unique tool available. The Association helps on-island vendors connect with couples and international planners alike to assist them with their weddings and event planning needs on the island.
Richard Moss – ST. LUCIA
We are a destination that resonates with people’s love language.
Richard Moss
Senior Marketing Manager, Richard Moss, sold attendees on the luscious offerings of St. Lucia.
From the island’s white sandy beaches to its lush rainforests, volcanic mud baths, authentic island foods, and lively nightlife spots, St. Lucia has endless activities and exciting places for couples to explore, unwind, and make new memories together.
The destination is also keeping a careful eye on the constantly evolving consumer.
Echoing the sentiment of Meghan Ely and Liene Stevens’s presentations on GenZ, Richard noted that folks today are shopping for destinations differently. Especially younger generations. However, St. Lucia is paying attention to the psychographic data (a.k.a how people think).
“Younger generations,” he revealed, “are looking for Instagrammable moments.”
A major part of his role is thus helping couples navigate the geography of the island to help them find the perfect location for their weddings and celebrations.
“It is a matchmaking experience,” he shared.
For St. Lucia, the winter season is their busiest time with all airlifts at a maximum. In the fall period, they host more FAM trips for folks to fully experience the island and its culture. Then, in the Spring, they host Jazz and Art Festivals to add more interest in the off-season.
“Our cultural offerings are so uniquely different,” he concluded. “We have a unique Creolization of various cultures on the island.”
Rosa Harris – CAYMAN ISLANDS TOURISM
A proud Caymanian born and raised, Mrs. Rosa Harris is the proud Director of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism.
With over 20 years of experience under her belt in the Tourism/Hospitality sector in the Cayman Islands, Rosa is an eloquent leader whose knowledge and love of her country are felt in every word.
Rosa elaborated on the destination’s highlights, including the exciting nature and warmth of Caymanian hospitality.
In Cayman, we welcome guests to the dinner table and offer a bespoke experience.
Rosa Harris
The multi-island destination includes three distinct locations, Grand Cayman, Cayman Braq, and Little Cayman, which each offer very different experiences.
In Grand Cayman, couples can experience the award-winning Seven Mile Beach and stay at one of the island’s many luxurious accommodations (such as the Westin, our beautiful host resort!), swim with stingrays, or explore a unique blend of art and culture in town.
A quick 30-minute flight away, Cayman Brac is a nature lovers paradise with world-renowned dive sites, lush hiking trails, and laidback accommodations. Finally, Little Cayman, at only 10 miles long and 1 mile wide, offers soft sands and peaceful quiet.
“In little Cayman, you can really unplug,” she shared.
As other panelists noted, they too are following the data points indicating a changing demographic.
“Travelers today are younger,” Rosa noted. “We’re seeing more mixed couples and more diversity, and they want to unearth more in terms of content.”
Nevertheless, after only 17 years in tourism, Cayman has seen tremendous growth.
“The wedding market started small and grew with providers as well,” Rosa shared. “We’re adding new resorts, like the Ritz Carlton, which is a major update.”
“Our business is a generational investment,” she concluded. “People who come to Cayman for their weddings come back for their honeymoons, and then their family vacations.”
Commissioner Joseph Boschulte – THE US VIRGIN ISLANDS
The US Virgin Islands provides an experience.
Commissioner Joseph Boschulte
Commissioner Joseph Boschulte for the U.S. Virgin Islands brings over 30 years of experience in business, finance, and government to the tourism department.
Deemed America’s Caribbean Paradise, Commissioner Joseph revealed that USVI’s biggest selling point is undoubtedly its ease of access and convenience.
Specifically for Citizens of the US, this destination does not require a passport. It’s also made up of three unique islands: St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John. Each island has its own unique qualities, ranging from St. Thomas’s culture to St. Croix’s history and St. John’s nature… couples have so many options to choose from!
In terms of accommodations (specifically for economy rooms), Commissioner Joseph noted USVI’s less traditional lodging options for intimate weddings. This includes boutique-style Airbnbs.
Commissioner Joseph admitted, “Our destination is more mature. We normally see weddings of people who are older or from cruise ships.”
“We win in smaller weddings and renewals,” he further explained.
However, while they are comfortable with who they are as a destination, USVI is in the process of transitioning and is carefully following the changing trends of young travelers.
“We are connecting where they are,” he shared, referencing Meghan Ely’s talk on the changing ways of doing business in weddings.
